Before the war broke out, Mahmoud Jamal Abu Mazkour spent his days training in the gym. His ambition was to represent Palestine in international bodybuilding competitions while supporting his family of three. Despite travel restrictions and a long-standing blockade limiting his chances to compete abroad, his focus remained sharp.

However, that trajectory was violently disrupted when he was forced to flee his home. Seeking shelter with relatives in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, his life changed on June 8, 2024. An Israeli strike hit a neighboring house near his location. The blast amputated one of his legs and caused severe fractures to the other. The attack also killed his sister and her children.

A long and painful recovery

In the aftermath of the strike, Abu Mazkour spent six months navigating Gaza’s overwhelmed healthcare system, moving between hospitals and recovery centers. The physical trauma was heavily compounded by grief and uncertainty regarding his future.

“There were times when I felt trapped in a dark tunnel,” he said, quoted by a recent report from the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA). “I thought my sporting career was over and that I would never return to the life I knew before.”

He eventually returned to his training, but the process has been physically taxing. The prosthetic limb he currently uses is not suited to his condition, often causing pain during movement and exercise. Getting a replacement is a massive hurdle, as the region faces severe shortages of specialized medical equipment and rehabilitation programs.

Changing ambitions

The realities of war have forced Abu Mazkour to reshape his goals. While he previously focused on stepping onto international podiums, his immediate priority is now focused on basic mobility and returning to the sport safely.

“I used to dream of representing Palestine in championships,” he explained. “Now I dream of getting a prosthetic limb that helps me continue my life and return to sport in a proper way.”

He hopes to travel abroad to receive a more advanced prosthetic limb, which would allow him to move freely and properly resume his competitive career.

Despite the profound losses, his drive remains intact. His story echoes the plight of many Palestinians who have suffered permanent disabilities during the conflict, facing a long road to recovery with limited resources.

“They took my leg, but they did not take my dream,” he affirmed. “I will continue no matter how difficult the challenges are, because determination is stronger than any obstacle.”
