Harry Kane would swap his new Ballon d’Or for a Champions League title. The holder of football’s biggest individual prize said so himself in Madrid on Monday, seven days after being crowned the world’s best player.
“I would choose the Champions League, but I have the opportunity to do both, let’s see what happens,” the 33-year-old told reporters on the eve of Bayern’s league phase meeting with Atlético Madrid.
“Team trophies are why we play football. The team aspect of our sport is really, really important,” he added, speaking to France24 and other outlets in Madrid.
73 goals, 14 in Europe, still no final
Kane collected the Ballon d’Or on 26 October after a season in which he scored 73 goals for club and country, 14 of them in the Champions League, and helped Bayern retain the Bundesliga. He finished the vote ahead of Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal and became the first English winner of the men’s award in a quarter of a century.

The one line missing from the record is a European title. His nearest attempt remains the 2019 final with Tottenham, a 2-0 defeat by Liverpool in this same city, played after he had been rushed back from an ankle injury. In Bavaria the pattern has repeated with less drama: a semi-final against Real Madrid in his first season, a quarter-final exit the year after, and another semi-final in May that Bayern lost 6-5 on aggregate to Paris Saint-Germain.
Danks in charge for the trip to Atlético
Bayern arrive at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano with only one win from their first three league phase games, having drawn with Arsenal and Viking. Head coach Vincent Kompany is still absent after collapsing in training last week with meningeal irritation; the Belgian is not expected back on the bench before 20 November, with assistant Aaron Danks in temporary charge.
Kick-off against Diego Simeone’s side is on Tuesday evening in Madrid.
