Has Brighton pushed Chelsea deeper into crisis?

Brighton took control almost immediately

According to Edward Elliot’s report for BreakingNews.ie, Brighton were in command within minutes and never let Chelsea settle. Ferdi Kadioglu opened the scoring early after Chelsea failed to deal with a corner, and the home side kept finding space as the visitors struggled to organize themselves. Jack Hinshelwood doubled the lead after the break, and Danny Welbeck finished the job in stoppage time as Brighton climbed above Chelsea in the table.

Chelsea had no answer going forward

Chelsea were without Cole Palmer, Estevao and Joao Pedro, and the lack of attacking edge was obvious from the start. They did not manage a single shot on target, their shape looked uncertain, and Robert Sanchez’s distribution only added to the mess. Even when Chelsea had chances to steady themselves, the moves broke down quickly, and the frustration from the away end kept growing as the game slipped further away.

The mood around Rosenior turned ugly

The pressure was not limited to the scoreboard. Away fans aimed explicit chants at Rosenior and co owner Behdad Eghbali after Brighton’s second goal, while home supporters answered by singing in support of a coach who began his coaching career with the Seagulls. According to John Brewin’s report in The Guardian, Rosenior later called it the “most difficult night” of his Chelsea tenure and said the performance was “unacceptable in every aspect of the game.”

Wembley now feels much heavier

According to the FA’s semi final schedule announcement, Chelsea face Leeds United at Wembley on Sunday 26 April. That match was already important, but this result changes the mood around it completely. Chelsea now head into the semi final with five straight league defeats, no goals in that run, and serious questions around whether Rosenior can quickly restore belief, discipline and any real attacking threat.
