Henry sees Ronaldo-like mentality in Yamal as Barcelona fall short in Europe
Thierry Henry compared Lamine Yamal’s mentality to that of a young Cristiano Ronaldo after the Barcelona teenager backed up his bold pre-match claims with an eye-catching performance, despite his side’s Champions League elimination.
Barcelona fell 3-2 on aggregate to Atletico Madrid in their quarter-final tie, bringing an end to their European campaign earlier than many had anticipated. Yet even in defeat, Yamal’s display stood out as one of the defining storylines from the night in Madrid.
Fast start sparks brief comeback hopes
Facing a two-goal deficit at the Metropolitano, Barcelona needed an immediate response—and it was their youngest star who delivered. Yamal found the net within the opening minutes, injecting belief into a side under heavy pressure.
Ferran Torres soon added a second goal to level the tie on aggregate, briefly shifting momentum in Barcelona’s favor. During that spell, Hansi Flick’s side looked capable of producing a memorable comeback, with Yamal at the center of their attacking play.

Atletico regain control as comeback fades
The momentum, however, did not last. Atletico Madrid gradually reasserted themselves, with Ademola Lookman restoring their aggregate advantage.
Barcelona’s task became even more difficult when Eric Garcia received a late red card, effectively ending any realistic hopes of a turnaround and confirming their exit from the competition.
Henry highlights Ronaldo-like mentality
Speaking on CBS, Henry praised Yamal’s rare ability to combine confidence off the pitch with decisive performances on it—drawing comparisons to Cristiano Ronaldo in his early years.
“This is what a young Cristiano Ronaldo used to do: he could talk boldly in interviews and back it up on the pitch. Yamal said he would carry Barcelona single-handedly, and barely two minutes into the game, he had already scored. But what impresses me even more is his fearlessness. At such a young age, he plays with confidence, creativity, and maturity beyond his years. He doesn't hide, he demands the ball, and he makes things happen when they matter most. That's the mark of a special player.”

Henry added that such mentality is uncommon in players of Yamal’s age, particularly in high-pressure European fixtures.
Record-breaking season continues
The goal in Madrid marked Yamal’s 40th direct goal involvement of the season, underlining his growing importance within the squad, according to GOAL.com.
Still only 18, he has quickly established himself as a central figure in Flick’s system, consistently stepping up in key moments even as the team has shown inconsistency at times.
Focus turns to La Liga title race
With their European campaign over, Barcelona now turn their full attention to domestic competition. They hold a nine-point lead at the top of La Liga with seven matches remaining.

Their next test comes against Celta Vigo, where Yamal is expected to play a leading role once again as Barcelona aim to secure the title and end the season with silverware despite their Champions League disappointment.
