A $2.8 million route back
Mario Hezonja is heading back to the NBA for the first time since 2020.
The 31-year-old Croatian has agreed to a one-year, $2.8 million minimum contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers. The agreement was confirmed to ESPN by Michael Tellem of Excel Sports Management.
According to Kurt Helin’s report for NBC Sports, Hezonja attracted interest after developing into one of Europe’s leading forwards.
Cleveland wins the race
Golden State were also reported to be considering a move for Hezonja.

However, the available reports do not show that Cleveland defeated the Warriors in a formal bidding war. It is more accurate to say that the Cavaliers secured his signature amid interest from Golden State and several European clubs.
The move gives Hezonja another chance to establish himself in the league that drafted him fifth overall in 2015.
Six years after leaving the NBA
Hezonja previously spent five seasons in the NBA with the Orlando Magic, New York Knicks and Portland Trail Blazers.
He played his final game for Portland during the 2019–20 season before returning to Europe. Across his first NBA spell, he averaged 6.9 points and 3.1 rebounds per game.

His European journey took him to Panathinaikos and UNICS Kazan before he joined Real Madrid in 2022.
Europe transformed his career
Hezonja returned from the United States with his reputation damaged after failing to meet the expectations that followed his high draft position.
His standing changed during six strong years in Europe. At Real Madrid, he became a key scorer and helped the club win the EuroLeague, two Spanish league titles, the Copa del Rey and two Spanish Super Cups.
Hezonja spent four seasons with Madrid, rather than six as the original draft suggested.

MVP form sparks NBA return
Hezonja produced some of the best basketball of his career during the 2025–26 season.
As described by Real Madrid in its official MVP announcement, he averaged 17.5 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.9 assists during the Liga Endesa regular season.
Those performances earned him the league’s MVP award and a second successive place in its team of the season.
Madrid exit turns messy
Hezonja’s route out of Real Madrid has not been entirely straightforward.

His contract ran until 2029 but included a clause allowing him to return to the NBA for around €850,000. Reports said he informed Madrid of his wish to use the clause before the deadline but did not transfer the money at the same time.
As reported by Óscar Périz for Mundo Deportivo, that left Madrid in a stronger position to demand a new agreement or a larger payment.
Agent drops a giant clue
Before the Cavaliers deal emerged, representative Miško Ražnatović appeared to reveal Hezonja’s destination through a cryptic message on X.
“The Republic of Dubrovnik and its inhabitants have always been known for their commercial mentality. Centuries have passed, things have changed, and now that mentality has somehow become chivalrous, equestrian…”

The message, quoted by Sportske novosti, linked Hezonja’s birthplace of Dubrovnik with the meaning of the word “Cavaliers.”
LeBron decision shakes up Cleveland
The agreement arrived after LeBron James chose to join the Philadelphia 76ers rather than return to Cleveland.
Reports suggested that several teams delayed other moves while waiting for James to decide his future. Once Cleveland missed out, its plans for the remaining roster places became clearer.
Hezonja is not a direct replacement for James, but he offers size, shooting and experience on the wing at a far lower price.
Harden situation remains unclear
The original article stated that Hezonja would join a Cavaliers roster featuring James Harden and Donovan Mitchell.
Mitchell remains one of Cleveland’s central players, but Harden’s position is less certain. He reportedly declined his player option, with the Cavaliers still hoping to agree a new contract.
It is therefore premature to present Harden as a confirmed member of Cleveland’s 2026–27 roster.
One final issue to settle
Hezonja has agreed his NBA contract, but Madrid’s compensation still needs to be handled correctly.
AS reported on the agreement with Cleveland while noting that the missed payment deadline had left his Spanish contract in an uncertain position.
Once that issue is resolved, Hezonja can begin a second NBA chapter with far more experience and a much stronger European record behind him.
