Standing in front of the Amazon Prime camera in Portugal, Rasmus Hojlund did something strikers at big Italian clubs rarely do on live television. He contradicted his manager within minutes of the final whistle.

Massimiliano Allegri had just told Italian broadcasters that the first 70 minutes of Napoli’s 4-1 defeat at Porto on Wednesday had been fine, a tired side undone by two set pieces and a long injury list. Hojlund, interviewed moments later on Prime Video, disagreed in public.

“I disagree; I think, of course, it’s not a bad game. I can agree with this, but we have to stop conceding bad goals, and we have to start winning football matches,” the Danish striker told Prime Video, as reported by Football Italia.

The forward then widened the blame beyond the pitch, saying Napoli were “in a very dark place” and that “not only players, everybody in the football club needs to take responsibility.”

Hojlund rejects his manager’s 70-minute defence

Allegri’s post-match line, delivered in the press conference, was that Napoli had largely held their own against a dangerous Porto side before fatigue did the rest.

“We made mistakes on two set plays, the team had in my view a good performance up to the 70th minute,” he told reporters, pointing to a treatment room that included Stanislav Lobotka and Giovanni Di Lorenzo and calling the limitations of his squad the heart of the problem.

Hojlund’s rebuttal, broadcast live to Italian viewers while Allegri was still in the press room, is the clearest public break between a senior player and the head coach since Allegri replaced Antonio Conte in the Napoli dugout.

Three defeats in four Champions League games

The night at the Dragão was Porto’s first European win of the season under Francesco Farioli and Napoli’s third defeat in four Champions League league-phase matches. Jan Bednarek headed Porto in front after 11 minutes. Scott McTominay levelled before the break. Then the game broke apart after the hour, with Gabriel Veiga, Jakub Kiwior and a stoppage-time Samu Aghehowa penalty finishing it 4-1. Rafa Marín was sent off in the 89th minute for bringing down Samu, per Football Italia’s match report.

Napoli sit on three points from four Champions League matches and are eighth in Serie A. Reports of flashpoints between squad members during the Porto defeat have added to the pressure on the head coach.
