Nicolò Tresoldi had just headed in the opener in a 2-1 win at PSV Eindhoven in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night. By the following morning, as Jürgen Klopp unveiled his party in Frankfurt, the forward was one of the first names the questions kept coming back to.

Klopp was speaking after naming his 24-man squad for the UEFA Nations League fixtures against Serbia and the Netherlands.

“With Nico Tresoldi, it’s almost exactly the same. He scored an incredible goal last night in another away win in Eindhoven,” Klopp told DFB.TV.

The striker is not in the November party, but Klopp said the staff were in regular contact with him and that his situation had already been discussed in full.

An Italian-born striker eligible for three nations

Tresoldi was born in Cagliari and moved to Germany as a 13-year-old. He is eligible to play for Germany, Italy or Argentina, the last through his mother. He has represented Germany at under-19 and under-21 level and leads the scoring charts across the UEFA U21 European Championship qualifying competition.

At senior level, the decision has not been made. Tresoldi has told Goal that he will not choose between Germany and Italy before the 2027 U21 European Championship.

“My heart is 50:50. Both countries mean a lot to me,” Tresoldi said.

He has described his phone contact with Klopp as resembling a father-son exchange rather than a coach-player one, and said the Germany boss had assured him the door would remain open.

Germany’s centre-forward question

Wednesday’s goal in Eindhoven followed a hat-trick Tresoldi scored for Club Brugge against Internazionale in October, and his growing Champions League profile has arrived at a moment when Germany’s senior attack has been under scrutiny. Klopp’s team sits third in its Nations League group, and the absence of consistent goalscoring from recognised strikers has been a running theme of his first months in the job.

Antonio Di Salvo, the U21 head coach, has made clear he is not forcing the decision.

“Insofar as it’s possible, I leave him in peace,” Di Salvo said in October.

Germany play Serbia away on 13 November and host the Netherlands in Berlin on 16 November.
