Senegal’s World Cup exit has quickly turned into something bigger than a painful defeat.
After the 3-2 loss to Belgium, midfielder Pape Gueye has publicly distanced himself from the national team setup. The Villarreal player has made it clear that he does not plan to continue with Senegal while the current coaching staff remains in charge.
It is a strong statement from one of Senegal’s important players, and it places immediate pressure on the federation after a tournament that ended in frustration.
A public break with the staff
According to TV 2 Sport, Gueye announced his decision on Instagram after Senegal were knocked out by Belgium.

“I will return to say a few words about our exit, but I can already announce today that as long as this coaching staff remains, I am taking a break from the national team,” he wrote.
The message was short, but the meaning was clear.
Gueye is not stepping away from Senegal because of age, injury or lack of interest. He is doing so because he no longer wants to work under the current staff led by Pape Thiaw.
Belgium defeat left deep scars
Reported by Aftonbladet, Senegal’s World Cup ended in the round of 32 after Belgium came from 2-0 down to win 3-2.

That kind of defeat is difficult to absorb.
Senegal had looked close to one of the tournament’s major knockout wins, only to lose control late in the match. For a team with ambitions of going deeper, the collapse brought anger as well as disappointment.
Gueye’s reaction suggests that the frustration was not only about the result. It was also about the decisions made from the bench.
A key player speaks out
Gueye was not a fringe player looking in from the outside.

The 27-year-old started every match for Senegal at the World Cup and scored twice in the final group game against Iraq. That gives his criticism extra weight.
Described by AS, Gueye was visibly unhappy when he was substituted against Belgium in the 66th minute.
After the match, he made clear that he did not believe the change was forced by his physical condition.
“I felt perfectly fine, I was physically well. It is the coach who decides, and that is it,” he said.

Those words do not sound like a player who accepted the decision easily.
Thiaw defended his changes
Pape Thiaw, for his part, pointed to the physical state of his players when explaining the substitutions.
“We could not manage the 2-0 result. The penalty, everyone can comment on that, I do not want to go into it. We had physical problems, there were players who could not go on anymore, so we were forced to make changes. You have to accept it, that is football,” he said.
That explanation may not be enough to calm the situation.

When a senior player publicly refuses to continue under the staff, the discussion moves beyond one match. It becomes a question of trust, authority and whether the dressing room still believes in the direction of the team.
Senegal face an uncomfortable aftermath
Senegal now have two problems to deal with.
The first is sporting. They are out of the World Cup after letting a two-goal lead slip in a knockout match.
The second may be more damaging. One of their key midfielders has openly challenged the leadership of the national team.
Gueye’s decision does not have to be permanent. His own wording leaves the door open for a return if the coaching situation changes.
But for now, the message is blunt.
Senegal have not only lost a World Cup match. They may also have lost one of the players who helped carry them there.
