Madison Square Garden gets the first truly loaded night of the 2026-27 NBA season on Tuesday, when the New York Knicks hoist their first championship banner in 53 years and immediately take on LeBron James in a Philadelphia 76ers uniform.

James signed a two-year, $8 million contract with the Sixers in July after eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, giving him a record-extending 24th campaign at the age of 41.

“I had visions of playing in Madison Square Garden and finishing my career in the Garden,” James told reporters after joining the franchise.

The 7pm local time tip-off at MSG sits in the middle of a tripleheader on NBC and Peacock. Boston visits Detroit at 3pm local time, and Oklahoma City travels to San Antonio at 8:30pm local time to close out the night, a rematch of last season’s Western Conference Finals that the Spurs won in seven games before falling to New York in the championship series.

The Knicks’ first banner since 1973

Jalen Brunson’s 45-point closing performance in Game 5 at the AT&T Center delivered a 94-90 road win in June and the franchise’s third NBA title, its first since Walt Frazier, Willis Reed and Earl Monroe did it in May 1973.

The offseason’s biggest piece of business sent Giannis Antetokounmpo out of Milwaukee for the first time in his career. The Bucks traded Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis to the Miami Heat for Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel’el Ware, Kasparas Jakucionis and draft picks, with the deal finalised in June ahead of the NBA Draft.

Pairing Antetokounmpo with Bam Adebayo under head coach Erik Spoelstra gives Miami a frontcourt built around two of the league’s most versatile defenders. Antetokounmpo becomes eligible for a four-year, $275 million extension six months after the trade.

Boston runs it back with Tatum and George

The Celtics broke up the Jayson Tatum-Jaylen Brown partnership that had anchored the team for nine seasons. Boston sent Brown to Philadelphia for Paul George, two first-round picks and two second-rounders, pairing the nine-time All-Star with Tatum. The swap also stacked the Sixers’ starting unit with James, Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Brown and VJ Edgecombe.

Tatum is cleared for a full season after rupturing his right Achilles tendon in last year’s playoffs.

“I feel great,” he said at media day, adding that he intends to play on back-to-back nights from the opening weekend.

OKC and the Spurs restart in Texas

The night closes with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Thunder at the AT&T Center, visiting the Spurs who ended their season. Gilgeous-Alexander is coming off back-to-back MVP awards and has downplayed the idea of chasing a historic third.
