The tip came from Spanish Formula 1 journalist Carlos Miquel, speaking on El Partidazo de COPE.
“Mark your calendars, because the announcement is likely to come right before Monza,” Miquel said.
That would put Ferrari’s confirmation on its home weekend, with the Italian Grand Prix scheduled for 4 to 6 September at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza. Hamilton originally signed a two-plus-one deal when he joined the Scuderia for 2025, with the third year on the table as a unilateral driver option. The extension is therefore his to trigger, not a fresh negotiation.
The Vasseur deflection in July
Fred Vasseur was asked the question directly ahead of the British Grand Prix in July and pushed back on the framing.

“Who spoke about the extension?” the Ferrari team principal said.
“Ok, I will discuss with him for the extension, with everybody. He is still under contract with us and it’s not time to discuss about an extension.”
Six weeks on, the paddock has moved past that holding line.
Barcelona reset the picture
Hamilton’s 2025 was ugly by his standards. He finished 86 points behind teammate Charles Leclerc, with no Grand Prix podiums to show for it. His 2026 turned on one Sunday in June.

He won the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix on 14 June, his first victory in Ferrari red and his first Grand Prix win in any team’s colours since the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix. It ended a 686-day drought and made him, at 41, the oldest driver to win a Formula 1 race since Jack Brabham in 1970. Kimi Antonelli’s retirement four laps from home handed him the win, but the pace was real: Ferrari had been competitive all weekend.
Hamilton is chasing Antonelli in the drivers’ standings, with the Mercedes rookie leading the championship into the second half of the season.

Locking in Hamilton keeps one of the sport’s biggest names inside Maranello for the start of Formula 1’s next regulatory era. The 2027 season falls inside the new rules cycle that reshapes engines and aerodynamics, and continuity of driver feedback across that reset is what teams pay for.
Hamilton has spoken about his appetite for the project.

“I still love what I do with all my heart and I’m going to be here for quite some time,” he said earlier this year.
The next date to watch is Monza. Practice starts on Friday 4 September, and the race is on Sunday 6 September.
