Man Utd could lose wonderkid from today as huge transfer door opens

The 16-year-old wonderkid who tore up United’s academy becomes legally eligible to sign for a European club from today, with Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and Chelsea all circling…

JJ Gabriel turns 16 on Tuesday, 6 October. For Manchester United, that date has been circled in red for months.

From today, the EU passport Gabriel inherits through his Irish family lets him move to a European club without the age restrictions that have kept him in Carrington. From today, he can also formally appoint an agent. Those are the two legal switches that convert “wantaway teenager” into “available free agent,” and United have not yet flipped either back.

Gabriel’s family submitted a deregistration request in September, asking United to cancel his contract. Several attempts to resolve the situation with his parents have come to nothing, and he has not trained at Carrington for more than a fortnight.

Training privately on the Catalan coast

Instead of United’s base, Gabriel has been in Catalonia. He has been working with private coach Jack Hunter at the British School Stadium in Castelldefels, on the southern edge of Barcelona, where his family are regular visitors. The arrangement puts him within commuting distance of the two Spanish clubs who have been linked hardest with the move.

Real Madrid are high on the list of suitors, and reports suggest Spain is the likeliest destination. Barcelona, Gabriel’s family’s preference, have publicly waved the story away.

“There’s nothing to say about this boy. It’s normal that players are linked with us,” Barcelona sporting director Deco said at the Portugal Football Summit.

“I’m not sure what’s happening, and if he’s still a Manchester United player. We are not involved in that.”

Suitors line up across Europe

Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig have all registered interest, according to transfer insider Graeme Bailey of TEAMtalk, who reports that United are fighting to keep him with no progress to show for it.

Chelsea are the leading English option. A move to another Premier League club would be the one route open to Gabriel without his EU passport, because the Football Association’s rules on domestic transfers of academy players do not share the European age bar.

Michael Carrick, confirmed as United’s permanent head coach in May, has handled the saga carefully in public. He named a 15-year-old in his pre-season squad, gave him eight minutes against Atletico Madrid, and spoke about Gabriel in the register of a safeguarder rather than a coach.

“We have to be a little bit careful on that one. He’s a 15-year-old boy,” Carrick told reporters in September. “It’s more about the welfare, the care and the attention of JJ as a child, really.”

A squad photo already out of date

The surreal detail of the saga is that Gabriel appears in United’s official 2026/27 team photograph, standing in the second row between Harry Amass and Tom Heaton. The picture was shot before the deregistration request landed, but it has sat on United’s channels through every week of the standoff since.

Gabriel earned the hype. He was United’s Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year last season with more than 20 under-18 goals, scored a hat-trick against Sabah in the UEFA Youth League, and was handed the number 95 shirt, the highest ever issued by the club. Nike have already signed him.

“It’ll be a massive blow for Man Utd,” Paul Merson told Sky Sports. “Believe me, this kid is an unbelievable talent.”

Gabriel has not played a competitive senior match for United. The next concrete step is the one United have spent weeks trying to prevent: an agent appointment and a club meeting, both of which become legally possible from today.
