The row that has broken out at Old Trafford is not primarily about whether Carrick stays, but about who takes his seat if he goes. According to reporting first carried by The Mirror and picked up by multiple British outlets, Wilcox and Vivell are pulling in opposite directions over the kind of head coach the club should pursue.

Vivell, the former RB Leipzig and Chelsea recruitment lead, is pushing for Julian Nagelsmann, the recently departed Germany manager. Wilcox, who outranks him in the hierarchy, prefers a Premier League-proven name and is said to see Eddie Howe as the most likely fit, with Fabian Hurzeler, Unai Emery and Antonio Conte also on the shortlist.

INEOS, the sporting partner that runs United’s football operation, is lining up behind Wilcox, according to the same reports. That matters: the dispute is being fought from a settled command structure, with Vivell arguing from the lower rung.

Carrick still in post, for now

Carrick has not been sacked. Sources briefed to SportBible describe his position as “untenable” and point to Sunday’s Premier League trip to Bournemouth as potentially his last game in charge. No announcement has been made by the club.

The trigger was Wednesday’s 4-1 defeat at Como, a Champions League night that extended United’s winless run to seven matches across all competitions. Nico Paz struck twice, Tasos Douvikas and Jacobo Ramón added the others, and Joshua Zirkzee’s late consolation did nothing to soften the picture of a side ripped apart in Italy.

Fernandes points at the staff

The most awkward public note came from the captain. Speaking after the match, Bruno Fernandes told reporters the tactical plan was not his to defend.

“It’s a decision from the staff to not press man-to-man and sometimes leave a little space in behind,” Fernandes said to Sky Sports, before adding that the fix sat “on the manager and on the staff to see it, it’s not on me.”

Carrick, speaking to Sky Sports in the same window, aimed his anger at the players instead, saying their performance was not acceptable and that a side cannot pick and choose when it turns up.

A board arguing while the pitch burns

The split between Wilcox and Vivell is not a side plot. Nagelsmann and Howe represent two very different projects for the squad United would build next summer, and the question of which one wins is being settled inside a boardroom that just watched its own head coach apologise to the travelling supporters at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia.

None of the names on either shortlist, from Nagelsmann through Howe to Emery, Conte and Hurzeler, has been approached publicly. The club has not confirmed Carrick’s status beyond the next fixture.

Kick-off at Bournemouth is on Sunday at the Vitality Stadium.
