For the first time in over a decade, Jose Mourinho and Diego Simeone will face off from opposing dugouts, adding an extra layer of intrigue to an already passionate Madrid derby.
Their last encounter dates back to 2014, when Simeone’s Atletico famously knocked Mourinho’s Chelsea out of the Champions League at Stamford Bridge. While Mourinho’s initial derby record against Simeone was strong, including a 4-1 victory at the Vicente Calderon in his first Madrid derby as Real boss, the overall head-to-head stands at three wins and a draw for Mourinho across six previous meetings. However, it was Simeone’s Atleti who ended a 14-year wait for a derby victory with their Copa del Rey triumph in 2013, a significant moment in the rivalry.
La Liga stakes and recent form
The upcoming derby carries significant weight for both teams in the La Liga title race. Real Madrid currently sit second in the table with 15 points from six games, level with Real Betis. Atletico Madrid are not far behind, in fourth place with 13 points. Barcelona leads the league with 21 points, meaning a defeat for Real Madrid could see them fall six points adrift after the first seven matches.
Both sides enter the fixture with recent wins under their belts. Atletico Madrid have bounced back from consecutive defeats against Athletic Club and Liverpool with impressive victories, beating Real Sociedad 3-0 and Osasuna 4-0. Real Madrid, meanwhile, secured a narrow 3-2 win against Elche, needing a 91st-minute winner from substitute Carlos Espi to seal the points.

Jose Mourinho, now 100 days into his second spell as Real Madrid manager, acknowledged the unique atmosphere of the fixture. “This is a derby. Derbies are always something more special because of the history, the culture of the games and the passion of the fans,” Mourinho told BBC Sport. He also reflected on his team’s tendency to find late solutions, stating, “I am aware of the fact we can improve, we have to improve, but I also see a lot of very positive collective and individual things and in the three games where we needed last-minute winners, we found them.”
Tactical battle and team news
The tactical battle promises to be intense. Simeone, who has managed Atleti in over 800 games since 2011, highlighted Real Madrid’s potent attacking transitions. “They’re better in transition than us,” Simeone observed, according to BBC Sport. “When there’s a loss of possession, they look for Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr, they play to that strength. We have to read the game well and not allow any turnovers, so we don’t allow them to use those transitions.”
Atletico, described as a team “in construction” after seven departures and five new arrivals over the summer, will be without injured forward Alexander Sorloth. However, Julian Alvarez, who missed the last two games with a muscle problem, is expected to feature at some point. New Canadian signing Jonathan David has been in fine form, scoring in his last two appearances. Real Madrid will rely on their key attacking duo of Mbappe and Vinicius Jr. to exploit spaces.

Despite the fierce rivalry, Simeone expressed respect for his counterpart. “I have huge respect for Mourinho, I’ve been an admirer of his for a long time. He knows the regard I have for him. Hopefully we can compete as we have done when we’ve faced him,” Simeone stated.
