Vinícius Júnior will walk out at the Emirates in December to face the team that tried to buy him. Arsenal were the standout suitors when Real Madrid signalled they would entertain offers for the Brazil forward if the contract standoff was not resolved, and the draw for the 2026-27 Champions League has now dropped that unfinished business straight onto matchday six.
Arsenal, playing their first European season as reigning Premier League champions, were drawn against Real Madrid alongside Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Napoli, Real Betis, Lille, Slavia Prague and Sabah. Real Madrid, Dortmund, Lille and Sabah travel to north London; the other four are away trips for Mikel Arteta’s side.
Kick-off is set for 8pm local time on Wednesday, 9 December, the sixth of the league phase’s eight matchdays. The two most recent Champions League winners will not meet in this draw. PSG beat Arsenal on penalties in the 2026 final; Arsenal’s other headline test comes at the Allianz Arena against Bayern.
A summer of Vinícius
Real Madrid’s position on Vinícius shifted markedly over the summer. With a year to run on his deal and talks stuck, the club told his camp it would not raise its offer, and Arsenal were named as the most credible landing spot in the Premier League if a sale materialised. He stayed. He now arrives at the Emirates as a Real Madrid player, and the venue is the one Premier League ground he came closest to calling home.

Arteta’s side spent the transfer window searching for a left-winger and had been ready, per the same reporting, to move quickly if he opened the door. He did not, and the question of what a Vinícius-in-red-and-white version of Arsenal would have looked like will be answered instead by Vinícius in white.
Mourinho back on English soil
Real Madrid will travel to London under José Mourinho, appointed on a three-year deal on 11 June and in the dugout since preseason. Florentino Pérez welcomed him back as “one of the best coaches in the world, a Madridista”, and set the target as “the 16th European Cup”.
The Emirates tie will be Mourinho’s first meeting with Arsenal since his Chelsea days.
Real Madrid’s road to north London
Real Madrid open the phase at the Bernabéu against Inter Milan on Tuesday, 8 September, and also host PSV, Leipzig and LASK. The other away games alongside Arsenal are Roma, Shakhtar Donetsk and AEK Athens.

Thirty-six clubs each play eight opponents in a single table. The top eight qualify directly for the last 16; teams finishing 9th to 24th enter a two-legged play-off, and the final is in Madrid on 5 June 2027.
