Neymar found himself at the centre of controversy once again on Tuesday after his post-match provocations following Santos’ 1-0 victory over Remo in the Copa do Brasil Round of 16 second leg. The 34-year-old, who came on as a second-half substitute, incited a furious reaction from Remo’s president, Antonio Carlos Teixeira, after taunting opposing players, officials, and fans.

The decisive match took place at Mangueirão stadium in Belém, Pará, where Santos secured their progression in the tournament by eliminating Remo. Neymar played a crucial role in the victory, providing the assist for Rony’s solitary goal.

A fiery exit from the Copa do Brasil

However, the focus quickly shifted from the on-field action to the tunnel area after the final whistle. According to Metropoles, Neymar confronted Remo’s delegation an

d supporters near the mixed zone, repeatedly shouting, “Eliminated! Eliminated!”

The Brazilian star’s actions were reportedly a response to intense harassment throughout the match. Metropoles indicated that Neymar was “very harassed” by fans inside Mangueirão stadium, facing “screams and curses directed at the player.” In return, members of Remo’s delegation were reported to have made ‘obscene gestures’ towards Neymar.

The incident drew a scathing rebuke from Remo president Antonio Carlos Teixeira. Speaking to reporters, Teixeira did not mince words, criticising Neymar’s behaviour and questioning his status as an idol.

“A great campaign [the one from Remo]. Now, feeling of being harmed, Santos doesn’t need that. And this bum Neymar, who is idolised by a bunch of children, who did his antics here, still came to provoke. So, we are guilty of idolising a bunch of bums like this guy,” Teixeira stated, as quoted by Futebol Info on X.

A history of controversy

This latest incident adds to a recent pattern of contentious moments for Neymar. Just last week, he confirmed his retirement from international duty, having previously worked to secure a call-up for Brazil’s 2026 World Cup squad, which he eventually received from Carlo Ancelotti.

His 2026 World Cup campaign was limited to two matches, where he scored one penalty goal in Brazil’s 2-1 defeat to Norway in the last 16.
