Romanian referee to oversee historic fixture

Romanian referee Istvan Kovacs will take charge of the 1,000th match in FIFA World Cup history on Sunday, when Tunisia face Japan in their group-stage meeting in Monterrey.

Kovacs will be joined by assistant referees Mihai Marica and Ferencz Tunyogi for the landmark fixture. According to Digi24, the officiating team will wear specially designed shirts to mark the occasion.

For the 41-year-old Kovacs, the appointment is a significant career milestone. He was part of the referee team at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he served as fourth official in eight matches, but Sunday’s game will be his first as the main referee at a World Cup.

Special shirts for a special match

FIFA has prepared a commemorative adidas referee shirt for the occasion, featuring gold details to reflect the importance of the match.

The design includes gold stripes and a special emblem combining the World Cup trophy with the number 1,000. The shirt is intended as a tribute to the scale and history of the tournament, which has grown into one of the biggest sporting events in the world.

Pierluigi Collina, chairman of the FIFA Referees Committee and director of FIFA’s refereeing division, said the appointment would place the officials in football history.

“To remain part of football history, and of FIFA World Cup history, by being appointed to referee the 1,000th match of the competition is clearly something special,” Collina said.

“We decided to create a special shirt to celebrate this match. It is a very beautiful shirt, decorated with gold elements: the stripes and an emblem representing the trophy and the number 1,000.”

Appointment based on merit

Collina, who refereed the 2002 World Cup final, stressed that Kovacs was not selected simply because of the milestone.

“We chose the referee who, in our opinion, is best suited to handle this match,” Collina said. “So it is a coincidence that he has been appointed to referee the 1,000th match. For him, it is an additional honour. Refereeing a World Cup match is always an immense privilege and a great honour.”

The appointment highlights Kovacs’ standing among Europe’s leading referees. His first World Cup match as the man in the middle will now come with added symbolism, placing him at the centre of one of the competition’s most notable statistical milestones.
