Piers Morgan says he knows why Cristiano Ronaldo abandoned Portugal’s training camp this week, and he says it is nothing like the story being told from either side.

On Wednesday evening in Copenhagen, head coach Jorge Jesus had used his pre-match press conference to insist there was no bust-up with his captain. Morgan replied in one word on social media: “Nonsense”.

He went further on The Times’ version of events, in which Ronaldo was said to have left camp after being told the team’s needs outranked his personal interests.

“That’s not why he walked out, as will become clear when he talks about it,” Morgan wrote.

The British broadcaster, who sat down with Ronaldo for the 2022 interview that ended his second Manchester United spell, is one of the player’s few media allies.

Jesus denies a fallout

Jesus had been asked about his captain on the eve of the Nations League match against Denmark, and he brushed the suggestion of a dispute aside.

“It seems like there was an issue between us, but there was no issue,” the manager told reporters.

“I’m the one who makes the decisions and everybody knows that.”

Ronaldo had been an unused substitute in Portugal’s 2-1 win over Norway the previous Sunday. Jesus’s press conference confirmed he would not start against Denmark either, and the 41-year-old left the camp a few hours later and flew out of the country.

Ronaldo promises his own account

Ronaldo set out his own line on Instagram the same night.

“Following the national team manager’s press conference, and after a conversation with the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, I have decided to leave the national team’s training camp,” he wrote.

He also promised an eventual full account.

“At the right time, I will tell all Portuguese the truth about the reasons that led me to leave the national team.”

The Portuguese Football Federation’s own statement confirmed only that Ronaldo would miss the rest of the international break.

Portugal win 4-2 without him

Portugal beat Denmark 4-2 in Copenhagen on Thursday, with João Cancelo opening the scoring, Gonçalo Ramos restoring the lead after Mikkel Damsgaard equalised, and Vitinha and João Félix adding the goals that saw the Nations League holders maintain a perfect record in this campaign.

Jesus has told reporters he will set out his full version of the Ronaldo week once the international break ends.
