Play stopped in Seattle

Belgium’s World Cup clash with Senegal was briefly interrupted after a group of pitch invaders entered the field during the first half.

The round-of-32 match in Seattle had already carried major stakes, with both teams fighting for a place in the last 16. The sudden security breach forced the referee to stop play while stewards moved in to remove the individuals from the pitch.

According to TV 2, the incident caused a short delay before the match was allowed to continue.

Security chased the invaders

The interruption came in the 32nd minute, with Senegal leading 1-0 after Habib Diarra’s opening goal.

According to The Sun, several people ran onto the pitch before security staff chased them down. One of the invaders reportedly avoided capture for a short period, drawing frustration from players and supporters inside the stadium.

The motive behind the pitch invasion has not been officially confirmed. There is no clear evidence that it was a political protest. The Sun reported that one of the alleged invaders was social media personality Joshua Kravchenko, who had posted about attending the match earlier, but that has not been presented as an official explanation for the incident.

A chaotic moment in a dramatic match

The brief stoppage did not appear to cause a long delay, but it came at a tense stage of a match that later developed into one of the tournament’s most dramatic games.

Belgium eventually came from 2-0 down to beat Senegal 3-2 after extra time. According to The Guardian, Youri Tielemans scored the decisive penalty at 124 minutes and 44 seconds, making it the latest goal in World Cup history.

For organisers, however, the pitch invasion will be an uncomfortable detail. Major tournaments depend not only on the quality of the football, but also on the ability to keep players, officials and spectators protected.

In this case, the match resumed quickly. But the sight of pitch invaders briefly taking over the stage was a reminder that even the biggest sporting events can be disrupted in seconds.
