Two months after Rodri was unveiled at the Camp Nou, the question of how Real Madrid let him slip has quietly refused to go away. The Spain midfielder was never considered an obvious Barcelona signing when the window opened, yet he ended up in blaugrana on a contract running to 2030.
Madrid Universal, a Madrid-aligned fan publication citing Diario SPORT, now claims Real Madrid had an agreement with Rodri before Barcelona made a serious move, and that an attempt by Juni Calafat – the club’s director of international football and an advisor to Florentino Pérez – to renegotiate the financial terms downward late in the process was the moment things turned. The outlet describes it as haggling over a player of Rodri’s stature, and says the midfielder’s camp was left uneasy by the treatment.
The claim lines up with reporting that was in the public record at the time. ESPN reported on 6 August that talks between Rodri and Real Madrid had gone “several days without any progress” before Barcelona stepped in, and that Rodri was concerned Real Madrid’s new head coach, José Mourinho, “had not been entirely convinced about his signing from the beginning.”
Mourinho himself only arrived at Real Madrid in June. He was named on a three-year deal on 11 June. Rodri had spent seven seasons at Manchester City under Pep Guardiola after joining from Atlético Madrid in 2019. According to Madrid Universal, the prospect of walking into a Mourinho rebuild, rather than the project he had been sold, weighed on the player’s camp.

Barcelona’s coordinated push
Madrid Universal’s account of Barcelona’s side is where the “what could have been” story turns. Head coach Hansi Flick signed off on the pursuit, sporting director Deco opened the channel with Manchester City, and the Catalan club matched Real Madrid’s original terms once it was clear Calafat was trying to push the number down. A video call that put president Joan Laporta, Flick and Deco in front of Rodri, the report says, was the moment the midfielder felt “truly wanted.”
By the weekend of 16 August, Barcelona had reached a deal. ESPN reported a package worth up to €76.5m (£65.3m). Rodri, the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner and named best player at this summer’s World Cup, signed a contract running to 2030.
“Very happy to arrive. For me, it’s a dream to play for Barcelona,” Rodri said on arrival on 18 August.
What Madrid Universal is, and what it is not
The caveat matters. Madrid Universal is a Madrid-aligned outlet, not a wire agency, and neither Real Madrid nor Barcelona has publicly confirmed the sequence it describes. Calafat, Mourinho and Rodri’s representatives have not spoken on the record about the late renegotiation claim. What is confirmed is the end point: Rodri left Manchester City for Barcelona for €76.5m in August, after Real Madrid had been in the lead to sign him and then dropped out.
