Tottenham ready huge Julian Alvarez offer – but he only wants one club

Barely 48 hours after reports Tottenham were lining up a record €130m bid for Julian Alvarez, the Argentine’s own preference for Barcelona has reduced Spurs’ chances to what one report…

Julian Alvarez wants Barcelona. Only Barcelona.

That short sentence is the one Tottenham Hotspur cannot plan around, and it is why the north London club’s chances of signing the Atletico Madrid striker are now described by The Hard Tackle as “extremely limited, possibly even impossible”. Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, as relayed by Yahoo Sports, reports Spurs will not be in genuine contention for the striker over the next 12 months.

The 26-year-old, a World Cup winner with Argentina in 2022, is reported to be holding out for what sources call his “dream” move to the Camp Nou, with Hansi Flick’s side the destination he would prefer should he ever leave the Spanish capital.

That stance effectively closes the door on a move Spurs had been quietly preparing. According to Spanish outlet El Nacional, as relayed by Caught Offside, Tottenham were ready to table a €130m offer and even write an unusual provision into the contract: a special clause that would let Alvarez leave for Barcelona down the line if the Catalans eventually came calling.

Arsenal already got the same answer

The pattern is not new. Alvarez was heavily linked with Arsenal in the closing stages of the summer window, and he turned the Gunners down. Arsenal are said to retain an interest, but any second attempt would run into the same preference that stopped the first.

Spurs’ predicament is sharper because of what they lack: Champions League football this season is seen as a serious obstacle in attracting a player of Alvarez’s level, with Tottenham’s European absence working against them even before Barcelona enters the equation.

A striker crisis Roberto De Zerbi has to fix

The push for Alvarez is rooted in Tottenham’s attacking numbers under Roberto De Zerbi, the Italian appointed head coach on 31 March 2026. Alvarez scored 20 goals and provided 10 assists for Atletico last season, exactly the elite focal point De Zerbi believes his squad is missing.

Spurs spent over £300m in the summer transfer window without landing an established number nine, and confidence in Dominic Solanke is said to be waning while Richarlison is being lined up for a sale.

Barcelona’s own path is far from clear

The complication for Alvarez is that his dream club does not have a straightforward path to signing him either. Barcelona declined to negotiate with Atletico over the striker in the summer, and the Catalan club’s well-documented financial pressures mean any January or next-summer approach is far from guaranteed to succeed.

For now, Alvarez stays at Atletico, where Diego Simeone remains in charge. The forward has started the current campaign slowly, without a goal in his first four matches.

Neither Tottenham nor Atletico have confirmed any contact over a transfer, and the proposed €130m fee and Barcelona release clause remain, for now, part of a reported plan rather than an actual bid.
