Luis Hernandez defeated Sedriques Dumas in just 57 seconds at UFC Vegas 121 on September 26 in Las Vegas. The Miami-Dade sheriff’s deputy, making his UFC debut, finished the fight with a standing guillotine choke.

The opportunity arrived at short notice. According to Sherdog, Mickey Gall withdrew because of a medical issue, leaving Hernandez to step in. The matchup, originally scheduled at middleweight, was moved to light heavyweight.

A punch followed by a quick finish

Hernandez hurt Dumas with a punch before securing the submission, as described by MMA Fighting. Dumas tapped before the opening minute was over, leaving the newcomer with an emphatic first UFC victory.

Their contrasting backgrounds had already attracted attention. According to Digi24, Hernandez walked out to KRS-One’s “Sound of da Police”, while Dumas chose Akon’s “Locked Up”.

Respect for the beaten opponent

Hernandez subsequently objected to some online posts about Dumas. “He’s a family guy,” he said, as quoted by MMA Junkie via Yahoo Sports. He rejected discrimination and said his opponent’s past should not define him.

Two victories in eleven days

The debut followed Hernandez’s September 15 submission win over Hugo Guillon on Dana White’s Contender Series. According to UFC’s account of the contract winners, that performance earned him a place on the roster.

Hernandez’s professional record now stands at nine wins without defeat, all secured before the final bell. UFC also recognised his debut with a Performance of the Night award, according to its official bonus announcement.
