Carlos Mac Allister has told Argentine media that the dressing-room address from Lionel Messi that lit up social feeds after the World Cup final was, in the words his son Alexis relayed to him, a plain tactical briefing.
The footage did not look that way.
Filmed in the MetLife Stadium tunnel and clipped across social platforms within hours of Spain’s 1-0 extra-time win, it showed the Argentina captain speaking quietly into a huddle of visibly emotional team-mates before kick-off.

“Calm down, let’s stay calm, guys, let’s just think about playing, calm down, let’s forget about everything, let’s forget about everything, let’s just play.”
Argentine journalists and fans read the moment several ways. Some pointed to this being Messi’s likely final World Cup match.
Others suspected a squad disagreement. One strand of speculation, aired by journalist Hernán Castillo, framed the speech as an emotional farewell in which Messi told the group it could be his last game in the shirt.

Carlos Mac Allister, a former Argentina international whose son Alexis started the final in midfield, went on radio to knock all of that down.

“He told me they talked about going out and playing football, playing, passing, combining, and not just sending the ball long,” he said, describing his conversation with Alexis after the match.
In his son’s telling, Messi’s instructions were about keeping possession, rotating the ball and building through triangles rather than lumping it forward against Spain’s press.
Carlos was blunter about the wider narrative.
“For some journalists, it’s hard to understand that sometimes, after a defeat, the only explanation is that the other team simply played better than you,” he added, telling listeners that Spain, and not any tunnel drama, was why Argentina left New Jersey without the trophy.

Torres wins it in extra time
Argentina’s night ended badly on the pitch too.
Enzo Fernández, one of the players visible beside Messi in the huddle, was sent off for a second yellow late in normal time after a challenge on Pau Cubarsí.
Ferran Torres, on as a substitute, then scored the only goal of the match in the 106th minute, hammering home a half-volley after Pedro Porro’s cross from the left was headed back across goal by Nico Williams.
Whatever Messi had said in the tunnel, the picture Carlos Mac Allister painted on Argentine radio was straightforward: a captain trying to lower the temperature, and a Spain side that was simply better on the night.
