West Ham United’s relegation from the Premier League has drawn sharp criticism from two of English football’s most decorated former strikers, Alan Shearer and Wayne Rooney, according to BBC.

Both analysts have dissected the club’s downfall, pointing to a combination of sustained poor performance, defensive frailties, a lack of attacking threat, and, crucially, a flawed recruitment strategy.

Shearer slams long-term failings and poor recruitment

Premier League record goalscorer Alan Shearer did not mince words when assessing West Ham’s season, stating that their relegation was a deserved outcome after 38 games.

He highlighted that the Hammers had been “really poor for long periods,” with issues at the top of the club ultimately filtering down to the pitch. Shearer’s analysis pointed to fundamental failings: the team was not good enough defensively, struggled to score goals, and suffered from a poor recruitment strategy.

The former Newcastle United striker reserved his most stinging criticism for the club’s transfer dealings. Since David Moyes’ departure three years ago, West Ham has invested heavily, signing ten players for £25 million or more. Yet, according to Shearer, the return on this substantial outlay has been minimal, with only a handful of these high-value signings proving successful:

  • Summerville
  • Fernandes
  • Possibly Castellanos

Shearer was unequivocal in his assessment of the club’s transfer dealings: “In the three years since David Moyes has left they’ve had 10 players who have been signed for £25m or more. You could argue only Summerville, Fernandes and maybe Castellanos who have been successes. They are nowhere near getting value for money.”

Rooney questions player effort and commitment

Adding to the chorus of disapproval, Manchester United record goalscorer Wayne Rooney offered a damning indictment of the players’ commitment on the pitch. Rooney, who closely observed West Ham throughout the season, suggested that the squad’s effort levels were simply not adequate for the demands of the Premier League.

“I’ve watched West Ham quite a few times this season and this is damning for the players. I don’t think the players have given enough,” Rooney stated.

He detailed specific instances where crucial effort was lacking: “I’ve seen them walking back, not getting to the ball to get tackles in, stop crosses, and those are the fine margins you have to get right.”

Rooney also contrasted West Ham’s situation with that of promoted teams, noting that many newcomers to the Premier League had successfully recruited well, enabling them to secure their top-flight status. This observation further underscores the perceived failings in West Ham’s own transfer strategy and on-field application.

The consensus from both Shearer and Rooney paints a clear picture of a club suffering from deep-seated issues, from boardroom decisions on transfers to the fundamental effort and quality displayed by players on the pitch, ultimately leading to their demotion from England’s top tier.
