Serena Williams’ highly anticipated return to singles action at Wimbledon ended in a first-round defeat, but the tennis icon has avoided a potential $50,000 fine for skipping her post-match media obligations. Williams, 44, was excused from both on-court and mandatory press conferences due to a knee injury sustained during her match.
A challenging return to singles
In her first singles appearance since the 2022 US Open, Williams faced a tough challenge against 20-year-old Australian Maya Joint. Despite her illustrious career, which includes 23 Grand Slam singles titles and 7 Wimbledon singles crowns, Williams ultimately fell to Joint in three sets, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3. Joint herself has been battling a lower-back injury that had derailed much of her 2026 campaign.
Media exemption granted for knee injury
Following her loss, Williams did not appear for her scheduled media duties, prompting an immediate statement: “Unfortunately, Serena Williams will not be able to undertake media this evening.” The Grand Slam Rulebook stipulates that players can face a fine of up to $50,000 for skipping media duties without “reasonable grounds,” such as injury or illness. However, Williams will not face any penalty.
Her long-standing agent, Jill Smoller, clarified the situation in a statement provided to The Times, cited by GiveMeSport. “Serena tweaked her knee at the end of the first set and was therefore excused from her media obligations by the Wimbledon and WTA medical teams,” Smoller confirmed.

Focus shifts to doubles with Venus
Despite the singles setback and injury scare, Williams is still slated to compete at Wimbledon. She is due to participate in the doubles tournament alongside her sister Venus Williams, with the pair having received a wildcard entry. Smoller provided an optimistic update on Serena’s condition, noting, “She left site that night unaided and is doing everything she can to be ready for her doubles match later this week.” The Williams sisters are scheduled to face the unseeded duo of Camila Osorio and Solana Sierra in their doubles opener on Friday.
