A dream scenario moving closer to reality

The prospect of Zinedine Zidane, Jürgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola leading three of Europe’s biggest football nations at the 2030 World Cup has captured the imagination of supporters.

What began as a dream scenario on social media now has some basis in reality. Zidane has reportedly agreed to take charge of France, Klopp is in talks with Germany, while Italy have approached Guardiola about their vacant managerial position.

According to a report from Yahoo Sports citing transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, Zidane has signed a contract to lead France until the summer of 2030. The French Football Federation has not yet formally announced the appointment, meaning the deal should still be described as reported rather than official.

Klopp’s situation is also advanced. According to Sky Sports, the former Liverpool manager has reached an agreement in principle with the German Football Association.

However, the DFB’s official announcement only confirmed that president Bernd Neuendorf and vice-president Hans-Joachim Watzke had held an initial, intensive meeting with Klopp about the position. His appointment is therefore not yet complete.

Italy make their move for Guardiola

The least developed part of the scenario concerns Guardiola.

According to ESPN, the Italian Football Federation has sounded out the former Manchester City manager after Italy failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

There is no agreement, and Guardiola has previously indicated that he wants time away from management. Nevertheless, the approach raises the possibility of the Spaniard taking his possession-based football into the international game for the first time.

Italy would be an intriguing destination. Guardiola has never coached in Serie A, but he spent part of his playing career with Brescia and Roma. Combining his positional approach with Italy’s long tactical tradition would make the national team one of the most closely watched projects in world football.

Three very different football philosophies

If all three coaches reach the 2030 World Cup, the tournament could offer a fascinating contrast in styles.

Klopp is closely associated with aggressive pressing, quick transitions and emotional intensity. His biggest challenge would be reproducing that highly coordinated football with the limited preparation time available at international level.

Guardiola would be expected to place greater emphasis on possession, positional discipline and control. His methods normally require extensive work on the training ground, which could make the adjustment to international management equally demanding.

Zidane is harder to place in a single tactical category. His success with Real Madrid was built less around one rigid system and more around flexibility, balance and the management of elite players. With France’s depth of attacking talent, that ability could prove particularly valuable.

The dream still comes with major conditions

Even if all three appointments are completed, there is no guarantee that France, Germany and Italy will meet at the tournament, or even that all three will qualify.

According to FIFA’s official tournament overview, Morocco, Portugal and Spain will host the 2030 World Cup, while Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay will each stage a centenary match. Those six countries qualify automatically, but France, Germany and Italy must earn their places through qualification.

For now, the prospect remains a mixture of confirmed talks, advanced reports and ambitious speculation. Yet the possibility of Zidane, Klopp and Guardiola competing on the same World Cup stage is considerably more credible than it appeared only a few weeks ago.
