As preparations intensify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, host cities across the United States are exploring the implementation of mandatory tipping for international visitors. The move, driven by concerns over varying global gratuity customs, comes as the tournament is already being dubbed one of the most expensive sporting events ever staged.

The proposal suggests that a service charge, potentially ranging from 20% to 22%, could be automatically added to restaurant bills. This measure aims to ensure that service staff receive customary gratuities, particularly from fans unfamiliar with the US tipping culture, which differs significantly from many other countries, including the UK and Australia.

The Missouri Restaurant Association has actively urged local venues in Kansas City to adopt mandatory tips. Trey Meyers, the association’s director of marketing and communications, articulated the core reason behind the push. “We just want to make sure that the servers and bartenders actually get tipped,” Meyers stated.

According to GB News, cited by Express, Kansas City, which is set to host six matches and anticipate 650,000 visitors, could see restaurants applying an automatic gratuity charge of up to 22%.

Host city preparations and financial pressures

Beyond Kansas City, other host cities are also navigating the complexities of the massive influx of fans. Boston, Massachusetts, for instance, is slated to stage seven games, including highly anticipated matches involving Scotland and England. The financial implications for fans attending these games are already substantial.

Accommodation costs have surged dramatically in several host cities, adding to the financial burden. Airfare prices have also doubled, a direct consequence of an 85% increase in jet fuel costs following the conflict in Iran. These escalating expenses have prompted calls for intervention, with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer urging FIFA to make tickets more affordable for supporters.

The scale of the 2026 tournament

The 2026 FIFA World Cup promises to be an unprecedented spectacle. All 48 qualified teams will participate in a tournament spanning 37 days, featuring a total of 103 matches.

The action kicks off in Mexico on June 11, culminating in the final at MetLife Stadium on July 19. With such a vast scale, the financial considerations for both organizers and attendees continue to be a significant talking point.
