As Norway’s national football team touches down in the USA for their first World Cup appearance since 1998, they haven’t arrived empty-handed – or rather, empty-bellied. Accompanying star players like Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard are 300 kilograms of red fish, 116 kilograms of brown cheese, and a trio of elite chefs, all part of an ambitious plan to fuel their World Cup dreams.
This marks Norway’s fourth World Cup qualification, and their first in 28 years, bringing an end to a long wait for a nation that boasts some of Europe’s most exciting talents. To ensure optimal performance, the team has taken an extraordinary approach to nutrition, flying in genuine Norwegian ingredients and a dedicated culinary team.
A taste of home for the World Cup campaign
The culinary contingent includes Aron Espeland, a Culinary Olympics winner in 2020, and Eirik Tufte, restaurant manager at Cru in Oslo, who join the team’s long-time chef, Christian Karlsson. Karlsson has been with the national squad since the 1990s, and planning for this World Cup mission began as early as November.
Their cargo is substantial, designed to provide the players with familiar and high-quality sustenance:

The emphasis on authenticity is paramount. “Being able to stand in the US and say, “I actually know the person who picks these tomatoes or the person who caught this halibut,” is really cool,” Espeland told VG. He added that the team’s preference for specific, high-quality Norwegian ingredients is a source of national pride. “We are a bit strange too. We want what we think is good, and work with the best Norwegian ingredients available. Being able to serve it when it really matters is something we take pride in, both our own and Norwegian pride in.”
Haaland’s ambition drives a nation’s hopes
The return to the global stage is a significant moment for Norway, whose last World Cup appearance saw them exit in the last 16. This time, the squad is spearheaded by Manchester City striker Erling Haaland, who has openly spoken about his personal drive to lead his country to major tournaments.

“Ever since I made my international debut in 2019, my big goal has been to get Norway to a World Cup and Euros,” Haaland told Reuters. The prolific forward acknowledges the weight of expectation but embraces it. “There is a lot of pressure on me but I like the pressure, I would put a lot of pressure on Erling Haaland if I wasn’t Erling Haaland myself.”
The Norwegian squad has landed in Greensboro, North Carolina, and will play a pre-tournament friendly against Morocco on Sunday, June 7, in New Jersey. Their World Cup campaign officially kicks off on June 16 against Iraq at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, as part of Group I, which also features France and Senegal.
