England’s aspirations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup could culminate not only in a challenging final on the pitch but also an unconventional trophy presentation off it, according to Chelsea captain Reece James. The defender has openly discussed the prospect of former US President Donald Trump once again being involved in the post-match celebrations, an experience James found surprising during the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

Trump is widely expected to present the World Cup trophy to the winning captain on July 19, 2026, at what is anticipated to be MetLife Stadium in the United States. This potential appearance follows his prominent role at the newly formatted FIFA Club World Cup held in the States in the summer of 2025.

Trump’s unexpected presence at the Club World Cup

During the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup final, which saw Chelsea defeat PSG 3-0, Donald Trump was chosen to present the winners’ medals to each Chelsea player. He then handed the new trophy directly to captain Reece James. However, Trump’s involvement extended beyond the planned protocol.

“I think the first thing I have to say is that it probably highlights how big the tournament is. The coverage for the tournament and the final was huge,” James told BBC Sport, reflecting on the incident. “Answering your question, before, they told me that he was going to present the trophy and then exit the stage, and I thought that he was going to exit the stage, but he wanted to stay.”

Trump remained in the middle of the Chelsea team as they lifted the trophy, a moment that caught many players off guard. Teammate Cole Palmer was even reportedly seen mouthing, “What’s he doing?” during the celebrations. When asked by The Standard if he was prepared for similar involvement from Trump at the 2026 World Cup, a 26-year-old James responded light-heartedly: “No! I don’t have a plan. I’ll leave that to Harry!” – a clear reference to England captain Harry Kane.

Heat concerns for the 2026 World Cup

Beyond the potential for a politically charged trophy presentation, players are also bracing for the extreme conditions of the 2026 World Cup. Co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, the tournament will be played in the American summer heat, with temperatures expected to soar beyond 30 degrees, particularly for the final in the US.

James, having experienced these conditions during the Club World Cup, highlighted the challenges. “It’s super difficult conditions to play in that heat, especially us playing in England — there’s not anything like that before,” he told The Standard. “Once you are out there you adapt the longer you are there. You feel the heat the minute you step outside the hotel. The conditions are super hot, difficult conditions to play in and the pitches when we were there weren’t the greatest either and made it a little bit harder. But hopefully by the time the World Cup comes around it’s better.”

Should England reach the final, they will face not only formidable opposition but also the dual challenges of intense heat and a potentially lingering Donald Trump as they aim to lift football’s most coveted prize.
