A second major after a nervy finish

Wyndham Clark strengthened his place among golf’s leading names by winning the 2026 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills, claiming his second major title three years after his breakthrough victory in Los Angeles.

The American had led from the opening round and carried a commanding advantage into Sunday, but his march to the trophy was far from routine. Clark closed with a three-over 73 and had to withstand a late challenge from Sam Burns before finishing at four under par, one shot clear.

Sky Sports reported in its final leaderboard article that Clark survived a final-round scare after taking a six-shot lead into the last day.

It was still a victory built on control over four rounds. At one of the game’s most demanding championship venues, Clark did enough to remain in front from start to finish.

A rare wire-to-wire achievement

Clark’s win was notable not only because it gave him a second U.S. Open title, but because of the manner in which he achieved it.

According to RJ Ochoa in SB Nation, Clark became just the ninth player to win the U.S. Open wire-to-wire without ties. The previous player to do so was Martin Kaymer in 2014.

“Wyndham Clark is a U.S. Open Champion. Again,” Ochoa wrote.

That distinction underlines how difficult it is to stay ahead for all four rounds at the U.S. Open, where course setup, weather and pressure often drag leaders back into the field.

Joining a select group

Clark’s first U.S. Open victory came in 2023 at Los Angeles Country Club. His second, at Shinnecock Hills, confirms that the first was no one-off.

The comparison with Bryson DeChambeau is natural. DeChambeau won the U.S. Open in 2020 and again in 2024, while Clark has now won two editions in a four-year span.

With the victory, Clark joins the small group of players to have won America’s national championship more than once. It is a mark of consistency in one of golf’s hardest tests, and it gives him a record that many more decorated players never managed to build.

Shinnecock adds another demanding chapter

Shinnecock Hills has long been associated with difficult U.S. Opens, and the 2026 edition added another chapter to that reputation.

Clark’s final round may not have been flawless, but it showed the resilience required to win a major when a large lead begins to shrink. Burns made the finish uncomfortable, while Tom Kim took third and Scottie Scheffler ended the week tied for fourth.

For Clark, the result was both a second major and a reminder of how thin the margins can be at the U.S. Open. He had led all week, but he still had to fight until the final holes to make history.
