Belgium emphatically defeated the United States 4-1 in a contentious 2026 World Cup Round of 16 clash at Seattle Stadium on Monday night. The victory was not only a dominant display on the pitch but also served as a pointed response to the pre-match controversy surrounding USA forward Folarin Balogun.

The Belgians established their superiority early, with Charles De Ketelaere netting two goals. While Malik Tillman managed to pull one back for the USA, second-half strikes from Hans Vanaken and Romelu Lukaku sealed Belgium’s comprehensive win. The result sets up a quarter-final encounter against Spain, scheduled for Friday at the Los Angeles Stadium.

The Balogun ban saga

The build-up to the match was overshadowed by a contentious FIFA decision. USMNT forward Folarin Balogun had been sent off in the USA’s 2-0 Round of 32 victory over Bosnia & Herzegovina, incurring a one-match ban. However, FIFA controversially suspended Balogun’s ban for a one-year probationary period, allowing him to feature against Belgium. This decision, which FIFA chief Gianni Infantino denied was influenced by US President Donald Trump, drew widespread criticism.

UEFA, European football’s governing body, labelled FIFA’s move as “unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable.” Prior to kick-off, the Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) formally informed the United States Soccer Federation that it contested Balogun’s eligibility, stating it “leaves all further actions open,” GiveMeSport reported.

Despite the off-field drama, Belgium’s head coach Rudi Garcia insisted the controversy did not serve as a primary motivator for his squad. “No, it wasn’t at all necessary. What really mattered to us was our game plan. We wanted to dominate the ‌game, avoid their ‌pressing and play higher up. We played with mastery, with ‌willingness and dedication. It was a great night for us and a great qualification for the quarter-finals,” Garcia told Aawsat.

For the USA, head coach Mauricio Pochettino offered a stark assessment of his team’s performance. “We didn’t show our real quality as a team. We never connected with the game. Belgium were better than us, and that’s it. It was a very bad day. It wasn’t our day, collectively or individually. In a tournament like the World Cup, when that happens in a knockout stage, you are out and you need to go home,” Pochettino stated, as reported by Reuters.

Belgium’s social media victory lap

Following their decisive victory, the official X (formerly Twitter) account of the Belgium national team took aim at their opponents with two viral posts. One tweet featured photos of celebrating Belgian players with the pointed caption: “Overturn this.” A subsequent post displayed the 4-1 scoreline alongside the caption: “It’s called s̶o̶c̶c̶e̶r̶ FOOTBALL.”

The match also saw a setback for Belgium, with midfielder Amadou Onana leaving the pitch in the first half due to a knee injury. He later re-emerged on crutches, though Garcia expressed confidence in his team’s ability to progress, stating, “We feel bad for him, but now that we are in the quarter-finals, we want to go to the semis.” The victory marks another dominant display against the Americans, following a 5-2 friendly win in Atlanta earlier in March.
