The build-up to Saturday’s World Cup quarter-final clash between Norway and England in Miami has been overshadowed by significant squad concerns for both nations.

Norway, fresh off a stunning 2-1 victory over five-time champions Brazil in the last 16, are grappling with an illness outbreak that has affected several key personnel. Coach Stale Solbakken revealed the challenges on Tuesday, stating, “We’ve had a few players who haven’t been feeling well, but things are getting better. It’s not ideal during a tournament, but we’re managing the situation.”

Among those impacted is striker Jorgen Strand Larsen, who was reported by Dagbladet as one of the players suffering from illness. Strand Larsen previously missed Norway’s opening 4-1 win against Iraq due to sickness. Defender Marcus Holmgren Pedersen also sat out the crucial Brazil tie with an illness, and has reportedly been struggling with a cough and tiredness this week. The team’s assistant coach, Kent Bergersen, has also been unwell in recent days.

Norway’s journey to the quarter-finals has been impressive, overcoming Brazil with a double from Erling Haaland, despite a late penalty from Neymar. Their path also included a 3-2 win against Senegal and a 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast in the last 32, alongside the earlier win against Iraq. A rotated squad suffered a 4-1 loss to France in the group stage.

England’s defensive woes and a controversial precedent

England faces its own set of challenges, particularly in defence. Right-back Jarell Quansah will be unavailable after receiving a straight red card during England’s hard-fought 3-2 victory over Mexico in Mexico City. Jude Bellingham netted a brace in that match, with Harry Kane converting a penalty. England are reportedly considering an appeal against Quansah’s one-game ban.

Adding to England’s concerns, midfielder Jordan Henderson is sidelined after sustaining a wrist injury. The incident occurred when Henderson fell over an advertising board while celebrating the win against Mexico. Despite being an unused substitute in that tie, Henderson has seen limited playing time throughout the tournament.

The potential appeal for Quansah’s ban comes amidst a controversial precedent set earlier in the tournament. USA striker Folarin Balogun was initially handed a one-game ban after being sent off during his nation’s last-32 win against Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, his suspension was controversially suspended after US president Donald Trump reportedly contacted FIFA chief Gianni Infantino. Despite this reprieve, the USA went on to lose 4-1 to Belgium in the last 16 on Monday.

As both teams prepare for their high-stakes encounter, the focus remains on how they will navigate these significant personnel issues in their quest for a World Cup semi-final berth.
