FIFA President Gianni Infantino has publicly extended his support to Argentina’s Nicolas Otamendi, just one week after the South American nation suffered a defeat in the 2026 World Cup final and while the global governing body conducts an investigation into the team’s post-match conduct. The message, reported by GiveMeSport and delivered via Instagram, arrives amidst swirling controversy surrounding Argentina’s behaviour following their loss to Spain.
The final, held on July 19 at the New York New Jersey Stadium, saw Spain emerge victorious. However, the aftermath was marred by incidents that prompted FIFA to launch an inquiry into whether Argentina’s players and coaching staff violated disciplinary codes.
A controversial show of support
Infantino’s show of support for Otamendi, who recently announced his international retirement, was posted on Instagram. The message, adorned with love heart and clapping emojis and the hashtag “#FootballUnitedTheWorld,” lauded the defender’s career. Comments on the post were notably disabled.
“Congratulations Nicolas Otamendi on an outstanding international career. A FIFA World Cup winner in 2022, a FIFA World Cup finalist once again in 2026 and one of Argentina’s most-capped players with 139 appearances, your leadership and determination helped shape a remarkable era for your national team. This public commendation comes despite reports that Otamendi himself had called Spain’s Rodri an “idiot” in the build-up to the final, following comments made by the Spanish midfielder about Argentina. Infantino’s active social media presence also included a 15-slide defence of the 2026 World Cup earlier in the week.
Argentina’s post-final conduct under scrutiny
The FIFA investigation stems from several incidents that occurred immediately after the final whistle. Argentina’s players and assistant coach Roberto Ayala were reportedly involved in physical altercations with their Spanish counterparts. Furthermore, a significant portion of the Argentine squad was observed with their backs turned as Rodri lifted the World Cup trophy.
Lisandro Martinez offered an explanation for the team’s actions, asserting that the gesture was not intended as a show of disrespect towards the Spanish team. Nevertheless, the incidents led to an eye-opening letter from Infantino to the Argentine Football Association being leaked over the weekend, hinting at the seriousness of the situation.
Infantino’s staunch defence of this summer’s tournament and his overt backing of Argentina have not gone without criticism. La Liga president Javier Tebas took to X (formerly Twitter) to label Infantino’s defence of the World Cup as “pathetic,” highlighting the growing tension around FIFA’s leadership and its handling of the post-final fallout.
