The specialist outlet reported on Thursday that Alpine’s leadership have been impressed with Colapinto’s adaptation to Formula 1’s current ruleset and are likely to lock in a 2027 deal for the 23-year-old Argentine. No date for a formal announcement was given.

Gasly’s own future is already settled. The Frenchman signed a two-year contract extension at the 2025 Italian Grand Prix that keeps him at the team through the end of 2028, one of the confirmed pieces on the 2027 grid.

Colapinto has been Alpine’s second driver since the São Paulo weekend last November, when the team confirmed him for 2026 alongside Gasly. Executive advisor Flavio Briatore called the decision “a clear indication of our commitment and strong support for Franco as he develops as a race driver”.

Alpine sit sixth in the constructors’ standings on 63 points, according to the Motorsport Week report.

Colapinto sounds settled

Speaking about his first full season, Colapinto told Motorsport Week he felt more at ease than at any earlier point in his F1 career.

“Much happier, more comfortable, more experienced. I think still, of course, needing to work in a lot of areas,” he said.

The report indicates that internal confidence in his progression is the driving factor behind Alpine’s readiness to commit early.

A smaller 2027 rules shift

The 2027 season is a comparatively narrow technical step after the sweeping regulations reset in 2026. The FIA has agreed to rebalance the power unit split back towards the internal combustion engine, with combustion output up 50kW and electrical deployment cut from 350kW to 300kW, and to trim the rear wing by around 20mm rather than force a full chassis reset.

That kind of narrower reset tends to reward driver continuity at teams still bedding in their 2026 machinery. Alpine will spend that year running Mercedes power for the first time, under a customer deal that runs from 2026 to 2030, and the team has already announced Gucci as its title partner from 2027.

Where the rest of the 2027 grid stands

Beyond Alpine’s second cockpit, plenty of the 2027 grid is still open. Both seats at Aston Martin, Audi, Cadillac, Haas and Racing Bulls remain formally unconfirmed for the year, according to PlanetF1’s tracker. Red Bull’s second seat is also listed as to be decided, though team principal Laurent Mekies has publicly maintained that Isack Hadjar’s place next to Max Verstappen is secure for 2027.

McLaren, Ferrari, Mercedes and Williams already have both drivers locked in for the same season.

Motorsport Week did not name any driver who would be in contention for the Alpine seat if Colapinto were not retained. The team has not commented publicly on the report.
