The provisional ban that pulled Nick Kyrgios out of tennis in early August is now a settled sanction. The Australian has accepted a one-month suspension after testing positive for cocaine at an ATP 250 event in Mallorca in June, according to a case decision from the International Tennis Integrity Agency reported on Friday.

Kyrgios provided the sample on 22 June 2026, and a WADA-accredited laboratory later “confirmed the presence of benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine”, according to the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA). The provisional ban took effect on 4 August 2026, and the one-month period of ineligibility ran through 3 September 2026, subject to completion of the treatment programme.

Cocaine sits on the WADA Prohibited List but is designated a “substance of abuse”, a category that carries reduced sanctions when use is shown to have taken place outside competition. Kyrgios told investigators he had used the drug socially during a night out before his scheduled match in Mallorca. After a WADA expert reviewed the sample levels against that timeline, the ITIA accepted the explanation and treated the case as an out-of-competition matter.

The default sanction under the code is three months. That drops to one for a player who enters and completes an ITIA-approved treatment programme, which Kyrgios has done.

Kyrgios: ‘I made a huge mistake’

The 31-year-old broke his silence in a statement posted on Instagram.

“I wanted you to hear this from me first,” Kyrgios wrote.

“I recently failed a drug test in Mallorca after testing positive for cocaine. I made a huge mistake and I take full responsibility for it.”

“I’m sorry to my fans, my family, my sponsors and everyone close to me. Above all, I’m sorry to the kids who follow me.”

“For the next 28 days, I’ll be stepping away from social media and public life while I focus on getting myself right.”

A thin 2026 record after wrist reconstruction

Kyrgios comes off the ban with a competitive record that has been thin on the ground for years. He underwent a full reconstruction of his right wrist in 2024 and has played only four ATP singles matches in 2026, losing his single Mallorca match to Adam Walton. He is ranked 918.

His most recent appearance on tour came at Wimbledon in July 2026, where he took a men’s doubles wildcard alongside Alexander Bublik and lost in the first round. His last Grand Slam singles main-draw match remains the 2022 Wimbledon final, a four-set loss to Novak Djokovic.

His prize money and ranking points from the Mallorca event have been forfeited. With his period of ineligibility now expired as of 3 September 2026, Kyrgios is free to enter tournaments again, though he has not yet confirmed a return event.
