Milan Fretin had been chasing a WorldTour victory for a long time. He finally got one on Thursday in Bama, the longest day of the 2026 Tour of Guangxi: 212.3km of racing from Jingxi that boiled down to the familiar bunch finish, but with an uncharacteristic twist.
With 150 metres remaining, Paul Magnier was perfectly positioned. The Soudal-Quick-Step sprinter opened up and popped his foot clean out of the pedal, coasting across the line in 21st.
Behind him, Fretin surged past Frits Biesterbos to take the stage ahead of Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe’s Jordi Meeus. The leading group was given the same time of 4:31:55.
Biesterbos inherits red on a tiebreaker
The real consequence of Magnier’s mistake lay in the general classification. He and Biesterbos finished the day on identical times, but cycling tiebreakers reward the better accumulated stage placings. Biesterbos has a stage win and a runner-up finish from the opening three days, enough to lift him above the Frenchman who won the Chongzuo opener.

That shuffles the red jersey onto the Picnic PostNL rider heading into Friday, with Magnier shadowing him on the same time.
For Fretin, the stage is a bigger moment than the numbers suggest. The 25-year-old Belgian had never won on cycling’s top circuit before, and the result is his fourth victory of 2026, his first on the WorldTour and the ninth of his career.
Three bunch sprints into the race, three different riders have won.
A climb before Nongla
Stage 4 on Friday takes the race from Bama to Tian’e over 164.8km, with around 2,700 metres of climbing packed into a succession of categorised ascents.

Any GC move will have to be launched early. The final summit falls roughly 23km from the finish, with a largely downhill run-in to Tian’e that favours a tactical finale rather than a straight climbing contest.
The traditional decider still waits at the end of the week, when the peloton tackles the Nongla summit finish.
