The 1,000-goal chase has suddenly turned into a sprint. Ronaldo arrived at Al-Awwal Park in Riyadh on Thursday night sitting on 982 career goals. He left on 985.

The hat-trick came in a 15-minute burst in the second half, as Al Nassr beat Al Kholood 5-3 in matchweek 12 of the Saudi Pro League. Ronaldo scored in the 66th, 72nd and 81st minutes, each goal fed from the same spine of the team. João Félix set up the first two, Sadio Mané the third, according to Gulf News.

Al Kholood had led inside 16 minutes through Julien Domingues, before Ângelo and Mané turned the game around for Al Nassr before the break. Antoine Loic Essomba Bikoula pulled a goal back in first-half stoppage time, and Domingues added a stoppage-time penalty at the other end, but by then Ronaldo’s second-half spell had put the result out of reach.

It was his 67th hat-trick across club and international football, per Sporting Tribune.

A night after the BOAT vote

Twenty-four hours before kick-off, Ronaldo had collected the inaugural Ballon d’Or of All Time, a public fan vote in which he finished ahead of Lionel Messi.

His 2008 Manchester United campaign, which brought 42 goals, a Premier League title, a Champions League trophy and his first Ballon d’Or, was voted the greatest single season in the award’s history, according to The National.

“Great win, great team performance. Happy to help with a hat-trick!” Ronaldo wrote on social media after the Al Kholood game, in a post relayed by The National.

The math on 1,000 before New Year

Analysis by BeIN Sports counts 13 fixtures left for Ronaldo this calendar year: 11 Al Nassr league games through November and December, plus up to two Portugal appearances in the UEFA Nations League against Denmark and Wales.

To reach 1,000 by 31 December, he would need to average 1.15 goals a game across all 13 matches, or 1.36 goals a game if the Portugal call-ups do not come.

He has scored 27 goals in 2026 so far, a pace below the one the final two months would require, though another evening like Thursday keeps the finish within reach.

Al Nassr are now level with Al Qadsiah on 28 points at the top of the Saudi Pro League, with a game in hand, according to Yen.com.gh.
