The Spaniard who left the Santiago Bernabéu for €12m in 2024 has become the problem Manchester United cannot design around. Real Madrid still hold a €35m buy-back option valid only in July 2027 on Rafa Marin, keeping the club he once played for first in line.
Michael Carrick’s side have made an initial enquiry about the 24-year-old centre-back, according to Fichajes. No formal offer has been tabled. An earlier €25m option that applied in 2026 has already expired, leaving only the 2027 window for Madrid to pull the trigger.
Napoli’s position is straightforward: they are not negotiating. Massimiliano Allegri has turned Marin into a fixture of his back line, and the club are preparing a renewal that would push his current 2029 contract further out and protect his value against outside interest.
Why United came calling
Marin has started 11 of Napoli’s first 12 fixtures in Serie A and the Champions League and scored his first goal for the club on 28 October in a 4-1 win over Monza. Another Premier League side offered €30m for him in the summer window, Fichajes reports, and Napoli said no.
Allegri’s possession-based system has helped. Marin, sold cheaply to Napoli by a Real Madrid side that could not find him minutes, is now a regular in Italy and Europe at an age when centre-backs usually start to command real money.
The clause behind the clause
The €35m figure is only one layer of Madrid’s grip on the deal. Fichajes also reports that Madrid retain a right to match any outside bid, which means United would have to persuade Napoli to sell and persuade Madrid to pass.
For Carrick, confirmed as Manchester United manager by the club’s board this week and under pressure after a 2-0 defeat at Chelsea on Saturday, the practical reality is that January is the wrong window. Napoli will not sell mid-season, and a bid in 2027 would land straight inside Madrid’s buy-back period.
