The first reaction that captured the mood came from a man who played in sky blue himself. Former Manchester City defender Michael Ball, asked about reports that Arsenal have put out feelers for Haaland, told GOAL, in an interview carried by Yahoo Sports, that the idea alone was almost too much to take in.

“Haaland going to Arsenal, that will be a headliner!”

Ball’s stunned response is the frame for a story that was unthinkable a year ago. Erling Haaland signed a contract tying him to City until 2034. He has 121 Premier League goals on the clock. And yet the rumour is not being laughed off, because the ground underneath Manchester City has shifted.

50 points and a cliff edge

The backdrop is the Premier League’s ruling against City on their long-running financial case. An independent commission found the club guilty of 114 of the 115 charges brought by the league, with the verdict emerging in late September 2026. City have lodged an appeal, but the expert verdicts have been uniformly bleak.

Former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness has told Football Insider, via football365, that the appeal looks “tenuous at best” and that a points deduction in the region of 50 would “probably ensure relegation in some way”.

Former City financial adviser Stefan Borson was blunt in the same reporting.

“City didn’t cooperate initially. That is a major aggravating factor.”

A sanction of that scale is the trigger the transfer market has been waiting for. If City drop into the Championship for 2027-28, the squad will not stay together. Haaland would be the biggest domino.

Barcelona first, if it comes to that

The complication for Arsenal is that Haaland’s own preference, if the worst-case scenario at City forces his hand, does not appear to point towards north London. Spanish reports cited by football365 have suggested Haaland is effectively waiting on Barcelona and views the current campaign as his last at City.

The reported pitch is a project built around him alongside Raphinha and Lamine Yamal under Hansi Flick. Real Madrid, long-standing admirers since his Borussia Dortmund days, are also in the picture. Fabrizio Romano has been more cautious, insisting nobody knows what Haaland will do next.

That is where the Arsenal angle sits. According to multiple reports, the Gunners have made inquiries through Haaland’s representatives. The club are among those actively monitoring the situation at the Etihad, with Barcelona, Liverpool and Real Madrid preparing to compete for his signature if he becomes available.

“I can’t respond to any of those questions”

Arteta has been asked directly. Speaking to The i Paper, as relayed by Livescore, the Arsenal manager would not go near a confirmation or a denial.

The father keeps the family line

Alf-Inge Haaland, Erling’s father, was asked about the Arsenal contact and the FFP fallout on Viaplay Fotball. His answer, carried by football365 and relayed from The Sun, kept the family firmly on the appeal.

“City believe they have strong evidence to stand up and prove their innocence, so I think we wait until that decision is reached.”

On his son, he was equally measured: Erling thinks about playing as much football as he can, and the people worrying about the rest are the ones outside the pitch.
