Gerwyn Price predicts rising stars at the World Darts Championship

SPORTbible reports that this year’s championship features a major format shift, with all 128 competitors beginning in round one rather than granting the top 32 automatic passage to the second stage.

Price opens against Czech thrower Adam Gawlas, widely remembered for handing Luke Littler his first PDC loss in 2023. Other early highlights include world youth finalist Beau Greaves facing Daryl Gurney, and defending champion Luke Humphries taking on Ted Evetts.

Four players on Price’s radar

During his appearance at Fireball’s “Final Boss” campaign event, Price identified Gian van Veen, Wessel Nijman, Josh Rock and Bradley Brooks as the most promising young contenders. He told SPORTbible that each has grown significantly on the ProTour across the season.

DartsNews has echoed this assessment, especially regarding van Veen, praising the 23-year-old’s rise in scoring consistency and competitive resilience. His recent major title, won against Humphries in a tight finish, further added to his momentum.

Price noted that van Veen displays an unusual level of calm for a player of his age. BBC Sport has also highlighted the Dutchman’s composure, describing it as a defining feature of his 2025 performances.

His victory at the 2025 World Youth Championship strengthened his status as one of the sport’s leading young prospects.

Price’s renewed form

Price’s own year has taken a positive turn. He told SPORTbible that wins on the European circuit and the World Series restored confidence after a difficult 2024 campaign.

Earlier reporting from PDC.tv detailed how he credited a mindset shift and a more manageable schedule with helping him regain rhythm. A strong Premier League spell and a semifinal appearance at the Grand Slam contributed to his sense that he is approaching the championship with clearer focus and energy.

Walk-on music reconsideration

Price also discussed his recent change of walk-on song, switching from “Ice Ice Baby” to Myles Smith’s “Nice To Meet You.” He said he intends to keep the new track but is still refining which part of the song works best and how the volume should be balanced within the venue to create the atmosphere he wants on stage.

Fireball’s “final boss” search

The interview took place as Fireball continues its search for this year’s “Final Boss,” a darts fan who will attend every day of the championship and share the experience from the best seat in the arena.
