Roy Keane has the perfect reply after Erling Haaland stick to football talk

Roy Keane has carried his confrontational edge seamlessly from the pitch to the studio, and a moment on a recent football podcast showed that some old disputes remain close to the surface.

During the latest episode of Stick to Football, Keane was presented with a hypothetical that touched one of the most controversial episodes of his playing career. His response quickly became the clip fans shared most from the show.

The exchange began when Jamie Carragher mentioned that Erling Haaland had been asked about appearing on the podcast. Speaking to CBS Sports, the Manchester City forward joked that joining a panel featuring Carragher and Keane might require reinforcements.

“Jamie Carragher now… and Roy Keane? I think I’ll need to bring my father,” Haaland said.

Carragher later put that remark directly to Keane.

“Which Haaland?” Keane asked, before adding moments later:

“Yeah, bring him in. Bring them all in. All his family — no problem. We’ll be ready.”

Gary Neville laughed immediately, while Ian Wright escalated the humour from across the table: “Tell him to bring his dinner. Bring your friends. Bring your dinner!”

Why the history still matters

Keane’s response carried weight because of his long-running dispute with Alf-Inge Haaland. Their relationship fractured during a Manchester derby in April 2001, when Keane was sent off for a forceful challenge on the then-Manchester City midfielder.

Football Association records show Keane was suspended and fined following the incident. Additional punishment was later imposed after he wrote in his 2002 autobiography that the tackle had been premeditated.

The tension between the two players had begun earlier, in 1999, when Haaland accused Keane of exaggerating contact during an incident that ultimately left Keane with a serious knee injury.

The name in today’s game

Since then, the Haaland surname has taken on a different significance. Alf-Inge’s son, Erling, has established himself as one of football’s leading strikers and a central figure in Manchester City’s recent dominance.

Even so, the past has occasionally resurfaced. After a scoreless draw between City and Arsenal last season, Keane labelled the younger Haaland a “spoilt brat,” a comment that British media reported angered Alf-Inge Haaland.

That context made Carragher’s question and Keane’s answer particularly loaded.

Whether the Haaland family ever accepts an invitation to sit alongside Keane on the podcast is uncertain. What was clear from the exchange is that football’s longest memories still have a way of resurfacing, especially when microphones are involved.
