Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk has been dealt a staggering four-year ban by the Football Association for a doping offence, a ruling that could sideline the 25-year-old until 2030. The unprecedented suspension, described by GiveMeSport as the longest in Premier League history, stems from the detection of the banned substance meldonium in a urine sample taken while Mudryk was on international duty with Ukraine.
Mudryk, who was provisionally suspended in December 2024, now faces a significant challenge to his career trajectory. The Ukraine international was signed by Chelsea from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2023 for a deal worth £89 million. His last appearance for the London club came in November 2024 during a Conference League match against Heidenheim.
Financial ramifications for Shakhtar Donetsk
The lengthy ban carries substantial financial implications, particularly for Mudryk’s former club, Shakhtar Donetsk. Much of the £89 million transfer fee was structured around performance-related add-ons, which are now in jeopardy due to Mudryk’s absence from competitive football.
Serhii Palkin, CEO of Shakhtar Donetsk, expressed his concern to GMS regarding the potential loss of these bonuses. “We have €30m (£26m) million of bonuses in his contract. If he’s not playing, or Chelsea aren’t reaching results, we are losing €30m. That’s a big financial impact for us,” Palkin stated.

Despite the setback, Palkin conveyed his belief in Mudryk’s character. “I know Mudryk as a player and a person. I believe he will return and start playing again,” he added, acknowledging the wait for a court decision on any appeal.
Mudryk prepares for appeal
Throughout the doping process, Mudryk has maintained his innocence and has been training individually in the hope of returning to the pitch. He has enlisted the services of Morgan Sports Law to represent him, the same firm that handled Paul Pogba’s doping ban. Mudryk plans to appeal the FA’s decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), seeking to either overturn the ban completely or have its duration significantly reduced. However, a hearing for his appeal has not yet been sanctioned.
During his time at Chelsea, Mudryk’s contributions included:
- 10 goals
- 11 assists
- 73 appearances
The ban casts a long shadow over the young winger’s future, leaving both his club and former club facing uncertainty over their investments and expectations.
