“Michael has got to stop defending them.”
That was Gary Neville on Sky Sports on Sunday night, moments after Fulham had held Manchester United to a 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage. Coming from a former United captain now watching his old club from a television studio, it was as sharp a public message to a sitting head coach as any this season.
Neville’s verdict on the performance itself was blunter still. The first 15 minutes of the second half, he said, were “a genuine disgrace”. He called both sides “mannequins” for the way they moved without the ball, and said he had never seen a Manchester United team “walk” as much as that, as reported by Football365.
The six names
Neville was specific about where the trouble was. On the Sky Sports panel he singled out Marcus Rashford, Bryan Mbeumo, Youri Tielemans, Kobbie Mainoo, Carlos Baleba and Bruno Fernandes as the group whose out-of-possession work would, in his own words, “kill” the head coach if it did not change. His argument was tactical rather than personal, according to GiveMeSport: the attacking players were sitting too high and too wide, and none of them narrowed back in when Fulham had the ball.

Carrick’s version
Carrick’s own account of the same night sat some distance from that.
“I thought we should’ve won the game. We created enough to win the game,” he told reporters at Craven Cottage.
The head coach also credited Fulham’s goalkeeper with the difference between the sides, saying he had produced “three top, top saves and arguably Man of the Match”, NBC Sports reported.
It was the gap between that tone and what he had seen on the pitch that Neville seized on, telling viewers the head coach must be saying something very different in the dressing room to what he was saying publicly.

Points on the board
The context around the words is not flattering. United sit 12th in the Premier League after five matches, on five points, with one win, two draws and two defeats. Matheus Cunha’s deflected late equalizer rescued a point at Craven Cottage after a Lisandro Martínez own goal had put Fulham ahead, but it did nothing to lift a run that has now produced one league win in five attempts.
Carrick was appointed head coach at Old Trafford in January 2026 after the dismissal of Ruben Amorim, and continues in the role.
