Conor McGregor has raised fresh questions about his future after describing his proposed UFC return in 2027 as “The Last Dance.”
The former two-division champion is recovering from the knee injury that brought his long-awaited comeback against Max Holloway to a painful and premature conclusion at UFC 329 on July 11.
McGregor lasted only 69 seconds before the fight was stopped. The Irishman injured his right knee while attempting his opening kick and was unable to continue, bringing an abrupt end to his first appearance inside the octagon for five years.
He has now identified International Fight Week in July 2027 as the target for another comeback.

McGregor announces his ‘Last Dance’
According to Damon Martin of MMA Fighting, McGregor shared a video of himself warming up before the Holloway fight and wrote:
“What was to be a generational beating is now to be reset. IFW 2027. The Last Dance.”
IFW refers to the UFC’s annual International Fight Week, traditionally held in Las Vegas during the summer.
The wording was immediately interpreted by some supporters and media outlets as a retirement announcement. However, McGregor did not explicitly state that the proposed fight would be the last of his entire combat sports career.

Instead, the clearest indication is that he intends to complete the final bout remaining on his current UFC contract.
Retirement has not been confirmed
In an earlier Instagram post, McGregor outlined his recovery plan following the injury.
“Surgery. Prehab. Return to martial arts practice. Go again. Final fight of the contract. Please God!” he wrote.
That distinction is important. A final contractual appearance for the UFC would not necessarily prevent McGregor from signing a new agreement or pursuing fights elsewhere.
The 38-year-old has previously competed in professional boxing, most notably against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2017. He is also a part-owner of Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship, creating several possible paths beyond his existing UFC deal.
For that reason, describing the 2027 fight as the confirmed final contest of his career would go beyond what McGregor has actually announced.
Another long recovery begins
McGregor’s latest setback came during his rematch with Holloway, more than a decade after he defeated the Hawaiian by unanimous decision in their first meeting in 2013.
The return had been presented as a chance for McGregor to revive a career stalled by injuries and inactivity. Instead, his knee gave way almost immediately.

As the Associated Press reported, McGregor landed awkwardly after throwing his opening kick and fell to the canvas twice more while attempting to continue. The referee eventually stopped the contest after one minute and nine seconds.
UFC chief executive Dana White has since said that he expects McGregor to remain out of competition for approximately a year.
“I have no idea,” White said when asked about the fighter’s recovery. “We had him on FaceTime tonight, ringside, but, you know, Conor McGregor’s out for a year.”
That timeline would make a return during International Fight Week in July 2027 possible, although no fight has been officially announced.
Holloway trilogy remains a possibility
McGregor has expressed interest in facing Holloway again, but the UFC has not confirmed an opponent for his proposed return.
The two fighters now have one victory each. McGregor won their first encounter in 2013, while Holloway was awarded the UFC 329 contest after McGregor could not continue because of the injury.
A third meeting would offer a natural conclusion to the rivalry, but scheduling it would require Holloway to wait while McGregor undergoes surgery, rehabilitation and another full training camp.
At this stage, the date, opponent and location all remain uncertain.
The end of an era or another reinvention?
Few fighters have had a greater commercial impact on mixed martial arts than McGregor.
He became the first competitor in UFC history to hold championships in two weight divisions simultaneously and helped transform the promotion into a mainstream global product. His aggressive fighting style, outspoken personality and ability to generate attention made him the biggest individual star the company has produced.
His recent record, however, tells a different story. McGregor has not won a fight since defeating Donald Cerrone in January 2020, and repeated injuries have prevented him from rebuilding momentum.
“The Last Dance” may ultimately prove to be his farewell to the UFC. For now, however, it should be viewed as a target and a hint rather than a definitive retirement announcement.
McGregor is planning one more attempt to return. Whether it becomes the final fight of his career remains a question only he can answer.
