Emiliano “Dibu” Martínez has suggested that he could step away from the Argentina national team following their painful defeat in the 2026 World Cup final.
The Aston Villa goalkeeper stopped short of announcing his retirement. However, his message after Spain’s 1-0 victory made clear that his future with the Albiceleste is now under consideration.
Emotional message raises doubts
According to LA NACION’s full reproduction of his Instagram post, Martínez wrote:
“I dreamed we would win it again. I dreamed of bringing it to Argentina and making history once more. The truth is, the pain is difficult to explain. There is a lot to reflect on and to consider how we move forward, and whether it is time to step aside.

“I am very sorry. I really tried my hardest to help my country and my teammates.”
The wording leaves the door open to an international retirement but does not confirm that a final decision has been made.
Old retirement promise resurfaces
An earlier video of Martínez discussing retirement circulated again before the tournament. However, the conversation was not recorded immediately before the 2026 World Cup.
According to Infobae’s report on the original interview, it came from an AFA special filmed in December 2024 featuring Martínez, Alexis Mac Allister, Enzo Fernández, Gonzalo Montiel and Lautaro Martínez.

During the light-hearted conversation, Martínez said he would retire from international football if Argentina won consecutive World Cups. It was Lautaro, rather than Mac Allister or Enzo, who joked about the goalkeeper’s age.
That condition was ultimately not met, but Martínez’s latest message suggests the defeat may still have prompted him to reassess his international career.
Record display cannot save Argentina
Martínez was Argentina’s outstanding performer in the final, repeatedly denying a dominant Spain side.
According to FIFA’s official match centre, Spain registered 12 shots on target. Martínez saved 11 of them before Ferran Torres finally broke the deadlock in the 106th minute.

Fox Sports reported that his performance set a new record for saves in a men’s World Cup final since detailed records began in 1966.
Despite his resistance, Argentina could not produce an equaliser as Spain secured their second world title.
Juventus rumours continue
Martínez’s future is also attracting attention at club level. Despite suggestions that he could leave Aston Villa, he is not approaching the end of his contract. Aston Villa’s official announcement confirms that his current deal runs until 2029.
According to Susy Campanale of Football Italia, Juventus remain interested and Martínez has reportedly agreed personal terms with the Italian club. No transfer agreement between Juventus and Aston Villa has been announced.

For now, both his club and international futures remain unresolved. The only certainty is that Martínez has not yet formally ended his memorable career with Argentina.
