Folarin Balogun is set to feature for the USA in their World Cup Round of 16 clash against Belgium after FIFA controversially overturned his red card suspension. The decision has sparked widespread debate, with GiveMeSport reporting that the ruling came amid claims of direct intervention from the Donald Trump administration.

Balogun, who scored during the USA’s Round of 32 victory over Bosnia & Herzegovina, was sent off after accidentally landing on an opponent’s ankle. As highlighted by GiveMeSport, the dismissal divided opinion immediately, with many fans and pundits arguing the challenge did not warrant a straight red card.

FIFA later suspended Balogun’s one-match ban for a year under Article 27 after an independent disciplinary committee reviewed the incident and concluded the original decision had been incorrect. However, according to GiveMeSport, the circumstances surrounding the reversal quickly became controversial after reports emerged that the White House had contacted FIFA over the case.

Citing OutKick’s Clay Travis, GiveMeSport reported that President Donald Trump, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and White House task force head Andrew Giuliani assembled a team of private lawyers to challenge the dismissal. Travis claimed: “President Trump, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and White House task force head Andrew Giuliani put together a team of elite lawyers — from outside the government — to challenge the Flo Balogun red card.”

He added: “Specifically, they challenged the use of slow-motion instant replay to give the red card, which they argued violated FIFA rules. The president also conveyed to Gianni Infantino, FIFA’s president, that the appeal had been filed and he believed the red card penalty was excessive. FIFA’s independent committee reviewed the decision and agreed the penalty was incorrectly given, rescinding it under their rule 27 authority.”

FIFA denies government influence

Despite the reports detailed by GiveMeSport, FIFA has strongly denied that the US government played any role in the decision to overturn Balogun’s suspension. Nevertheless, the governing body’s explanation has done little to silence criticism, particularly given the well-documented relationship between Donald Trump and FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

As GiveMeSport also noted, Trump appeared to celebrate the outcome on social media, posting: “Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice! President DONALD J. TRUMP.”

The decision means Balogun will now be available for the United States’ crucial last-16 meeting with Belgium. While the ruling is a major boost for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, GiveMeSport reports that the controversy surrounding FIFA’s decision—and the alleged political involvement behind it—continues to dominate discussion ahead of the knockout clash.
