While Argentina has already secured an unprecedented automatic qualification for the 2030 World Cup, England and its fellow Euro 2028 co-hosts face a significantly more challenging route to their own continental tournament. The stark difference in approach by FIFA and UEFA highlights a unique set of circumstances for the upcoming showpieces.
The 2030 World Cup, marking the competition’s centenary, will be primarily hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco. However, Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay have been granted the honour of staging their opening games at home as part of the celebrations. Crucially, all six nations have been rewarded with automatic qualification for the tournament, a scale of guaranteed places described as without precedent, according to GiveMeSport.
This decision means Argentina has already booked their spot, a move that comes despite the nation drawing widespread criticism for their conduct during their North American campaign, which included dumping England out of the 2026 World Cup semi-finals. Millions reportedly signed a petition calling for Argentina’s exclusion from future tournaments following their controversial behaviour.
England’s Euro 2028 qualification challenge
In contrast, England, Scotland, Wales, and the Republic of Ireland, who will jointly stage Euro 2028, have not been handed automatic berths. UEFA’s policy for the 24-team, 51-match tournament allows for only two of the four co-hosts to receive a safety net of reserved places.
Instead, all four nations will be placed into the standard qualifying draw for Euro 2028, split across separate groups from one another. The majority of the tournament spots will be decided through conventional means:
- All 12 group winners qualify automatically.
- The eight best runners-up qualify automatically.
These account for 20 of the 24 available places. The remaining two spots are held as a safety net exclusively for any two host nations who fail to qualify conventionally. This means England would only be guaranteed entry to Euro 2028 if two of the other three co-hosts also miss out on qualification through the standard group stage. Should more than two hosts fail to qualify, the reserved places would then be allocated based on qualifying ranking.
Despite England’s recent strong performances – reaching the semi-finals at the 2026 World Cup and being beaten finalists at both Euro 2020 and Euro 2024 – the Three Lions will still need to navigate a qualifying campaign to ensure their participation in a tournament where Wembley is set to host the semi-finals and final. The contrasting approaches by FIFA and UEFA set up a fascinating dynamic for the hosts of future major international football events.
