England’s preparations for their World Cup quarter-final showdown against Norway on Saturday have been significantly disrupted by a series of injury and illness concerns affecting key players. Manager Thomas Tuchel faces a challenging selection headache as his squad grapples with fitness issues, particularly in defence and midfield, ahead of a crucial match against an opponent featuring the tournament’s leading scorer, Erling Haaland, who has netted seven goals.

The defensive line-up is a major worry for England. Manchester City defender Marc Guehi is currently managing a hamstring strain and has been placed on an individual training programme. Despite playing the full 90 minutes in England’s 3-2 last-16 victory over Mexico at the Azteca Stadium, his fourth full game of the tournament, Guehi is scheduled for assessment on Friday. According to BBC Sport, missing the final training session would likely make him a major doubt for the Norway game, though the issue is not considered serious.

Further compounding Tuchel’s defensive woes is the confirmed two-game suspension for Jarell Quansah. FIFA confirmed the ban, which cannot be appealed, after Quansah was sent off against Mexico following a VAR intervention. This means Quansah will be unavailable for both the quarter-final and a potential semi-final. With Tino Livramento already sent home from the tournament requiring surgery for a calf injury, England’s right-back position has been particularly problematic. Djed Spence has been the only right-back consistently fit throughout the tournament, with Quansah deputising in two matches and Ezri Konsa stepping in during the Mexico win.

Konsa reflected on the difficulty of the role, telling BBC Sport, “With the heat and everything and having to change positions, going to right wing-back with a man down, it’s not easy.” While Reece James, who suffered a hamstring injury in the 0-0 draw with Ghana, returned to full training on Thursday and is set to be in contention, he did not complete the entire session, raising questions about his full match fitness. Should Guehi be unavailable, Tuchel’s options for centre-back include John Stones, Dan Burn, and Trevoh Chalobah, who was called up as a replacement for Livramento.

Midfield stability is also under threat, with Declan Rice missing two consecutive days of training due to a sickness bug. England’s medical staff are reportedly working to contain the bug to prevent its spread through the camp. Rice has also been struggling with a neural issue affecting his hamstring and lower back, a problem exacerbated by a demanding title-winning club season. He previously missed the group stage victory over Panama.

The quarter-final against Norway will take place at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. Tuchel will need to make critical decisions to navigate these significant personnel challenges and field a side capable of stopping Haaland and progressing further in the tournament.
