World football governing body FIFA has confirmed it will review the ongoing ban on Russian teams from international competition, following the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) decision to ease restrictions on Russian athletes. The move signals a potential shift in the landscape of global sports sanctions, which have been in place since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The IOC announced on Tuesday, July 2, 2026, that it had lifted its restrictions against Russian athletes, allowing them to participate in Olympic qualification events. This decision has now prompted FIFA to re-evaluate its own stance.

A cautious step towards reintegration

Speaking to Sky, FIFA confirmed its intention to consider the IOC’s actions. “FIFA has been informed of the IOC’s decision to temporarily lift the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee,” the organisation stated. “FIFA will analyze the decision before we decide the next steps in cooperation with the relevant stakeholders.”

This development comes after FIFA had already taken a preliminary step towards reintegrating Russian teams. The organisation recently approved Russia’s U15 national team to participate in a new U15 tournament later this year. This initiative, a fresh addition to FIFA’s calendar, is set to be held in Azerbaijan from October 22-31 and had previously drawn criticism from national federations like the Danish Football Association (DBU).

The boys’ tournament is scheduled for 2026.

A girls’ tournament will follow in 2027.

Both tournaments are planned to become annual events from 2028 onwards.

While Russia’s A-national team has been limited to playing only friendly matches since the invasion, the U15 tournament marked the first instance of a Russian national team being officially sanctioned for a FIFA-organised competition since the ban.

Opposition remains strong

Despite FIFA’s apparent openness to review, significant opposition to Russia’s return to international football persists. UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin has maintained that UEFA’s stance on Russia remains unchanged. National federations, such as the Danish Football Association (DBU), have also voiced strong objections.

As reported by Bold, DBU reiterated its firm position: “Our position on Russia in international football remains unchanged. As long as there is no peace in Ukraine, we believe that Russia should be excluded from all international football.” This sentiment highlights the political and ethical complexities FIFA faces as it navigates the path forward for Russian football on the global stage.
