Portugal’s 2026 World Cup campaign began with a disappointing 1-1 draw against DR Congo, but much of the post-match discussion has centered on comments made by Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Joao Neves regarding captain Cristiano Ronaldo.
According to a report highlighted by GiveMeSport, Neves has been subjected to a wave of criticism on social media after discussing Ronaldo’s role within the national team following the opening Group F fixture at Houston Stadium.

Portugal entered the tournament as one of the favourites to progress comfortably from their group but were unable to secure all three points against a determined DR Congo side.

While some observers interpreted the comments as an attempt to emphasise team unity, others viewed them as disrespectful towards one of football’s greatest-ever players.

As reported by The Sun and referenced by GiveMeSport, thousands of Ronaldo supporters reacted strongly to Neves’ remarks on social media.
The midfielder’s Instagram account was reportedly flooded with critical comments from fans who believed he had shown insufficient respect towards Portugal’s all-time leading goalscorer. The backlash was said to be so intense that replies referencing Ronaldo also appeared on posts made by Neves’ girlfriend, actress Madalena Aragao.
