The race for the 2026 men’s Ballon d’Or is officially underway, with France Football unveiling a 30-player shortlist that spans seven distinct leagues. The eligibility window, which ran from August 3, 2025, to July 19, 2026, saw players’ performances in their respective leagues and the recent World Cup heavily influence their inclusion.
Ligue 1 has emerged as the dominant force, accounting for nine of the 30 nominees. Remarkably, every single one of these players represents Paris Saint-Germain, highlighting the French club’s unprecedented strength. PSG celebrated a historic season, securing their fifth consecutive French title – a club first and their 14th overall – and retaining the Champions League crown by defeating Arsenal on penalties in Budapest. Ousmane Dembélé, the reigning Ballon d’Or holder, was pivotal, scoring the penalty that leveled the Champions League final before PSG triumphed 4-3 in the shootout. Midfielder Vitinha was named player of the match in that final, further cementing PSG’s European dominance.
Premier League and La Liga vie for influence
Following closely, the Premier League boasts seven nominees. Arsenal leads the English contingent with three players: Gabriel Magalhães, William Saliba, and Declan Rice, reflecting their title-winning campaign where they finished seven points clear of Manchester City and reached the Champions League final. Manchester City contributes two nominees in Erling Haaland, who secured his third Golden Boot in four seasons with 27 goals, and Rodri, who concluded his Manchester City tenure by winning the Golden Ball at the World Cup before moving to Barcelona. Elsewhere, Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes broke the Premier League’s single-season assists record with 21, surpassing the previous mark held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne, while Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella also made the cut.
La Liga secures six nominees, evenly split between rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid. Barcelona’s trio of Lamine Yamal, Pau Cubarsí, and Ferran Torres were instrumental in Spain’s World Cup victory, with Cubarsí earning the Best Young Player award and Torres netting the extra-time winner in the final. Barcelona also clinched their second consecutive league title. From Real Madrid, Kylian Mbappé, Jude Bellingham, and Vinícius Júnior are nominated, despite Real Madrid finishing the season without a trophy. Mbappé claimed his second straight Pichichi with 25 goals in 31 league games and took the World Cup Golden Boot with 10 goals.

Bundesliga’s Bayern focus and global breakthroughs
The Bundesliga sees all four of its nominees hailing from Bayern Munich, underscoring the German giant’s domestic prowess. Harry Kane, widely considered the favourite for the award, enjoyed an extraordinary season:
- 36 Bundesliga goals in 31 appearances
- 61 goals in 51 appearances across all competitions
- Won the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, and Supercup
- Secured a second European Golden Shoe by nine goals
- Scored 6 World Cup goals in 7 appearances
Kane is joined by Bayern teammates Michael Olise, who set a World Cup record with seven assists, Luis Díaz, and Dayot Upamecano.
The shortlist also features representatives from leagues beyond Europe’s traditional top five. The Saudi Pro League has two nominees: Sadio Mané of Al Nassr and Julián Quiñones of Al Qadsiah. Quiñones made history as only the second Mexican ever nominated, after Guillermo Ochoa in 2007, having won the Saudi league’s Golden Boot with 33 goals and scoring four times at a home World Cup. Notably, Cristiano Ronaldo, despite scoring 28 league goals and winning his first Saudi title with Al Nassr, was not nominated.
MLS sees Lionel Messi as its sole nominee. The Argentine maestro led Inter Miami to their first MLS Cup, winning his second consecutive league MVP award and the MLS Golden Boot with 29 goals. Messi also reached the World Cup final at 39, contributing eight goals and four assists. In stark contrast, Serie A has just one nominee, Lautaro Martínez, who finished as Capocannoniere with 17 goals as Inter Milan won the Scudetto. Federico Dimarco, named Serie A’s player of the season, notably missed out, and no Italian player features among the 30 nominees, according to GiveMeSport.
